Naya Rivera may be telling all in her new book, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up, but that hasn’t always been the case for the former Glee and Devious Maids star. The memoirs shared in Rivera’s book reveal some things that most people might not be so willing to share, including Naya’s confession of hiding a pregnancy and abortion from her boyfriend, Ryan Dorsey. While she ultimately married Dorsey, Rivera reveals that coming clean about that incident and many others in her book was a very frightening decision. In the end, Naya says she chose to bare it all in the hopes that she might help others.

Glee Star Naya Rivera Kept Her Pregnancy A Secret

Naya Rivera was starring on Glee in 2010 when she learned that she was pregnant with the child of Ryan Dorsey, who was her boyfriend at the time. As E! News shares, a segment of Rivera’s new book reveals that she kept the pregnancy a secret, knowing that she planned to have it terminated. It sounds like a story arc for a soap opera, but in this case, it was something Naya felt compelled to do so she could keep the focus on her career. Using a shooting break from Glee, Naya spent her day off getting the abortion.

Rivera reveals that she and Dorsey had already broken up when she learned of the pregnancy, but some may still question her integrity for not involving Ryan in the decision or at least letting him know. Eventually, Naya and Ryan reunited, and they married in 2014. They have an 11-month-old old son, Josey Dorsey.

“It was very scary to open up about everything,” Naya says. “It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”

Apparently, some of Rivera’s fans did question her actions in the pregnancy, and unsurprisingly, many of them took to Twitter to share their outrage. Earlier this week, Naya responded to her Twitter followers using the title of her memoir as a hashtag to further express her thoughts on the matter.

“I set out to write a book that was true to myself and would hopefully help others along the way. Media will always distort anything,” tweeted Ms. Rivera. “I hope that you all enjoy my story and respect my good intentions in sharing them with you. Xoxo #sorrynotsorry.”

Naya Rivera Reveals More Troubles In Sorry, Not Sorry

Even before Naya was faced with an unwanted pregnancy, People reveals that she also was forced to come to terms with an eating disorder. Rivera battled anorexia as a sophomore in high school, which had become so bad that she found herself avoiding food altogether. The future Glee actress would throw away the lunches her mom packed for her to get rid of the temptation of eating it.

“By the time I was a sophomore, I started feeling that what had begun as a game had maybe gone too far. I just avoided food at all costs,” Rivera writes in Sorry Not Sorry. “If my mom had packed a lunch for me, I’d either trash it or find some excuse to give it away.”

At the time, Naya thought she was engaging in a normal lifestyle but later discovered that her anorexia was a serious problem.

“I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff,” said Rivera. “I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”

While she was struggling with the eating disorder, Naya reveals that she was also coping with the break-up of her family. Her parents began fighting more and ultimately divorced, reveals Rivera in her new book.

Naya Rivera’s memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up, hits bookstores on September 13.
