Obama To Letterman: I Don’t Remember How Much The National Debt Is [Video]

Obama on Letterman show

Not close enough for government work?

President Barack Obama went on the Letterman show and told Dave (see clip below) that he didn’t remember how much the National Debt was. He was responding to Letterman’s question about the National Debt Clock that was a prominent feature of the Republican National Convention last month in Tampa.

Imagine just for a second how this would be treated by the mainstream media if Gov. Mitt Romney had a similar lapse in memory about such a fundamental issue.

In the Letterman interview, President Obama also insisted that the National Debt was nothing to worry about in the short term.

The National Debt is a staggering $16 trillion, a number that most of us can’t even comprehend. According to CBS News, the National Debt increased by about $5 trillion in the Obama’s first term alone; it took the Bush administration eight years to run up that level of massive red ink. It also “now exceeds 100% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, the total value of goods and services.”

There is plenty of blame on the part of both political parties to go around for the financial mess the country finds itself in. Commenting on the Letterman appearance, however, the Powerline blog opines the following:

“Obama’s answer was a masterpiece of prevarication. He described how the debt originated, and claimed, falsely, that he inherited a $1 trillion deficit. In fact, this country had never run a deficit anywhere near $1 trillion until FY 2009, the first year of the Obama administration.”

In a development directly related to the federal debt and the deficit, the Washington Examiner is reporting that the number of able-bodied Americans on food stamps has doubled after the Obama administration suspended certain work requirements for welfare programs.

Although the president apparently is thus far too busy to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu about the Iranian nuclear threat, his trip to New York also included a campaign fundraiser with Jay-Z and Beyonce that featured some interesting decor according to London’s Daily Mail:

President Barack Obama attended a $40,000 per ticket fundraiser at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in Manhattan that featured a champagne tower of 350 bottles worth $105,000 – more than twice the median household income of an American family.

The tower of $300-a-bottle Armand de Brignac Brut Gold, known as ‘Ace of Spades’ because of its label, is a permanent fixture at the club.

In terms of the ongoing media firestorm about Romney’s gaffe about 47% (i.e., the Obama’ voting bloc) supposedly being dependent on government benefits, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said in a radio interview that “Some people in the media should just turn in their media credential and get an ‘Obama for president’ credential, the way they focus on things that people said back last May.” As reported by Washington Times, Gov. Christie also claimed that that news media is trying to shift attention “away from what he considers the president’s ‘poor performance’ and ‘lack of a plan for the next four years.’”

Watch President Barack Obama say he doesn’t remember what the National Debt is precisely (about the two-minute mark):

Given the grave financial danger that the country faces with the federal deficit and the debt, should a president or presidential candidate know the exact amount of the National Debt?

The President didn't say he didn't know what the debt is…he said he couldn't remember what the SIGN said at that particular time. If the premise behind the sign is that it's constantly running, WTH!!!!!! Also, don't complain about something from May of this year being brought up and then bring up something from 1998!!!!! So STUPID!!!!!

Obama doesn't care about the debt or even the American people. All he cares is that he is the President. People are blind at what he does or doen't do. People will find any kind of excuses for him because he is a black Democrat president. If you go against him you are a racist. It is sad to see this happening. Because he is destroying this country. You know I hope he wins just to see how bad the country is going to get. May god help us.

Alfred, I really wish you would tell me why I should vote for Obama. Tell me some good reasons. If you give me some good reasons I will vote for him. I'm very opened minded.

The gall of the Inquisitr et al to speak of "prevarication." Just one example: "In fact, this country had never run a deficit anywhere near $1 trillion until FY 2009, the first year of the Obama administration.”.

Too bad FY 09 started on October 1, 2008. But nice try. That's pretty indicative of the whole line of attack, I'd say.

In the short 42 months, the National Debt has risen $5.6 TRILLION. For those who don't know how much money this is..It's 1,000 Billion Dollars times 5.6! Just in less than 42 months…so, think about this…Bush's Deficit was $1.7 Trillion and the bleeding liberals were screaming..Obama has increased it (by failed economic policies) by $5.6 Trillion and the liberals are "defending" his blaming Bush? Really? Sure he has a blank face…he's in denial…and blames everyone but himself….

O.K. I was wrong…George Bush didn't leave a $1.7 Trillion was $1.7 Trillion Debt in 2009…Bush wasn't even in office..It was Obama…Yes, He inherited 5.6% Unemployment, but he increased it to 8.2% and it's risen to 8.3 % and has been steady for 42 months…and Gas? Gas with Bush was $1.85 a gallon and Obama has increased it (check out his Czar Chu's statement that he thinks it should be $5.00 a gal and higher)…Obama's increased it to $3.99 a gal. Don't think he's responsible? He is…His EPA Regs have caused the oil companies to pass on all the penalties…Oh, and Clean Coal? Obama's closed, due to his EPA Regs, 12+ Clean Coal mines, causing job losses and the fact that coal energizes our power plants to the tune of 68% of our energy needs..You'll see these prices (electricity, etc) rise dramatically…
I heard on the news that "JUST NOW" Obama has agreed to opening up our reserves to bring the prices down…Why didn't he do this 24 months ago after we've been burdened with these high prices for so long??? Could it be he wants re-elected? I hope Americans are a lot smarter this time around..Question: Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago? The answer most Americans will tell you is NO. Obama said if he couldn't turn this country around in 4 years he'd be a one-term president..Well, He's failed miserably..America..Make him a 1 term president…give him his pac

He knows nothing about economics. The way to balance the budget is economic growth combined with fixed spending. The Bush tax cuts increased Federal revenues – $2.5 trillion in 2008 compared to $2.0 trillion in 2000. FACT! Unemployment went from 6.0 in 2003 to 4.6 in 2007. FACT! Putting more consumer money into the economy works.
Government spending does not because it has to choose where to spend the money. Also, if you are spending your own money you get to keep stuff. If the government is spending your money, it keeps the stuff. I would rather have the stuff that was bought with my money.
