Scarlett Johansson Named Highest Grossing Actress Of All Time, Talks Gender Pay Gap

Scarlett Johansson is now Hollywood’s highest-grossing actress of all-time, and comes in 10th place on Box Office Mojo‘s ranking of all actors.

Over the span of her career, the 31-year-old has brought in over $3 billion at the box office. With hit movies including The Jungle Book and others like Hail Caesar, Lucy, and Her under her belt, there’s no wonder the star has a long standing record of gross success.

But, hard work on Marvel’s series has definitely worked in her favor. Johansson’s portrayal of Black Widow in five of the comic based superhero films such as Iron Man 2, Captain America: Civil War, and The Avengers pushed her over the top. The Avengers (2012) raked in $623 million on its own in domestic theaters.

While the Marvel franchise has not made clear when or if Black Widow will get her own spinoff, she is rumored to be a part of other films included in the franchise series. And the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, currently filming in the Atlanta area, may just be her next sighting.

ComicBook.com reports have confirmed Iron Man will make an appearance and possibly even Captain America. Fans were teased with a tip that Johansson was on set via a tweet by Atlanta Filming’s Twitter account.

The tweet read, “Well, well…hi Scarlett. What’cha doing here.”

Those simple words were more than enough ammo to get viewers chiming in on the possibility that the curvy heroine will be joining in on the fun in Queens to help out the Spider-Man.

The Black Widow actress is also the youngest star on Box Office Mojo’s list — which is topped by the Indiana Jones star, Harrison Ford. Other notable actresses outside the top ten list are Cameron Diaz, who made it to number 19 overall. Helena Bonham-Carter also showed up, taking 26th place and actresses Cate Blanchett and Julia Roberts came in 29th and 30th, respectively.

Johansson admitted to mixed feelings about the reports, “It’s exciting to be the only woman in the [top ten] category but it’s kind of disappointing.” She also added it is a “little bit of a surprise.”

At a time when many actresses are quite outspoken about unequal pay in Hollywood, her ability to bring in top dollars at the theater explains why ScarJo expressed to Cosmopolitan that she chooses to stay mum on the topic.

“There’s something icky about me having that conversation unless it applies to a greater whole. I am very fortunate, I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage… I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general.”

It’s clear that Scarlett realizes actresses making millions per movie may sound a bit annoying to every day women working low- to mid-wage jobs.

But there are some areas in which the mother of one beautiful baby girl, Rose, is just like any other woman. No, she may not have the same financial struggles some may face, but suggested she can relate to the battles of being a working mother in an interview with Extra TV. ScarJo stated, “If somebody has the magic recipe for making it easy, let me know… working moms two thumbs up.”

Only in the comic books, ScarJo.

Box Office Mojo calculated Scarlett Johansson’s box office success based on 37 of her films; the numbers do not include cameos by the actress. What do you think of ScarJo’s success?
