‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Spoilers: Comic-Con Trailer Drops, What Do We Need To Know?

Alright, this article needs to be prefaced with a major spoiler warning about Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. If you have not seen the trailer, watch it now! If you are not caught up with the end of Season 6 as well as the latest issue of The Walking Dead graphic novel, issue No. 156, read with caution.

Also, if you missed the latest news about the second half of Fear The Walking Dead‘s second season, make sure to check out the Inquisitr’s writeup on that.

With that out of the way — let’s rewatch that trailer for the main show again, shall we?

For all of the teasing I’ve rightfully given AMC and the powers that be in the past when it comes to The Walking Dead, this is why I can never give up on what is arguably the most popular TV drama right now. The trailer was short, a bit too short for my liking, but this is what we needed to bring some hope and hype back to the premier zombie show on television.

Despite the trailer not being too long, there were a lot of things we saw, and some were so subtle you may have even missed them. The following are things that were spotted in the trailer, both good and bad. Please keep in mind that some of these seem to be well-intended guesses based on things that include camera angles, dialogue, and things that have been previously confirmed.

Grab your map, horse, and pet tiger, because we’re going to explore the Season 7 trailer for The Walking Dead.

  • AMC isn’t even hiding the fact that it’s Glenn who dies by Negan anymore, based on the fact they led with him to start the video rather than Rick, our protagonist. Granted, it was likely a nod to the fact that Negan kills Glenn in the comics — but come on, this is AMC. They know that we know Glenn is going to die this season.
  • At one point, we see Negan evidently in Alexandria and sitting outside with Olivia, a redshirt Alexandrian who manages the pantry. This comes from issue No. 103 in the comics, where Negan and some Saviors show up to take medicine from the Alexandrians after mocking Olivia’s weight. With Denise (thankfully) having died last season, could that mean Olivia is set to become the new Denise in terms of being Alexandria’s main medical person? Probably not, and I’d actually expect Rosita to take that role over.
  • Dwight takes on a bigger role in this trailer, which is to be expected after actor Austin Amelio was promoted to also starring, as the Inquisitr reported last week.
  • There was some doubt in the fandom about Shiva, Ezekiel’s pet tiger, making it to the small screen due to budget costs and the desire not to have a CGI tiger. The end result of that debate?

  • AMC decided to do something interesting with this trailer by having memories of each of Lucille’s possible victim flashing in their mind — from Maggie and Glenn kissing on the farm way back in Season 2 to Abraham and Sasha in ‘the-romance-that-is-annoying-every-female-fan-of-the-show’ from last season, there’s a heavy emphasis on characters in these scenes that are still alive and are keeping them alive. Think about it: we saw no Lori Grimes for Rick or Carl, no Merle Dixon for Daryl, no Hershel or Beth for Maggie — the list goes on and on. The only deceased character in those memories was Oscar, a redshirt prisoner from Season 3. Could that mean the theme of this season is letting go of the past and focusing just on the here and now?
  • At one point, we see what appears to be prisoners in jumpsuits with letters on their back (the letters ‘S’ and ‘F’ were both spotted) feeding walkers behind a chainlink fence. What do these letters stand for? Could ‘S’ be something like “scumbag” or “s**thead’ to remind these people that they’re prisoners and insignificant?
  • I love Carol Peletier and I think we all do, but she is not looking good — and she’s outside? The last we saw of her, she was being brought to the Kingdom with Morgan, so could she wake up during a break on the trip there and think it’s an ambush or an attack? Interesting.

  • AMC loves to trick us with some misleading dialogue, so don’t be worried about that line from around 1:45 where the woman says “whatever he’s done to you, don’t worry; there’s always war” because that probably isn’t aimed at Morgan. My guess? It’s something that will be said to Daryl or Carl, both of whom are prime candidates to be headed back to the Saviors’ camp — whether Negan and friends know it or not.
  • Here’s a little conspiracy theory for you: Negan at one point in the trailer says, “there’s no door like number four.” The fourth person in the starring cast when it comes to the order is Maggie Greene — whose husband is Glenn. People occasionally describe a chance at a relationship as a door being opened — which would mean that the person in question would have to be single.
  • No. 4 is also the amount of people in Maggie’s blood family (father Hershel, step-mother Annette, brother Shawn, and half-sister Beth) that have been lost and the amount of main camps that the group have had (the Atlanta quarry in season one, Hershel’s farm in Season 2, the West Georgia Correctional Facility from Season 3 to the middle of Season 4, and the Alexandria Safe-Zone from the second half of Season 5 to now). One of the few surviving characters to be a member of all four camps? Glenn.
  • Gregory and Jesus both make appearances in this trailer — brief, but they’re there and doing what they do best: Jesus is scavenging from a truck while Gregory is looking on in horror and fear. Who else is waiting for him to go bye bye?
  • Morgan is seen fighting walkers with his bo staff in a long, blue shirt, which is likely a nod to his appearance in the series pilot, “Days Gone Bye.”
  • An area that appears to be the Hilltop is on fire, and while there is an attack on Hilltop in the comic, the main one that deals the most damage happens at the end of All Out War. For the most part, Hilltop is essentially untouched in the war against the Saviors, though Rick does decide to move their residents to Alexandria towards the end of said war.
  • In case you’re into music, the song that plays during the trailer is “Take It All” by Ruelle. If that’s not a fitting song for a season that’s going to feature war and death, I don’t know what is.
  • We finally get to see Tara again and she, along with Heath, are both looking pretty distressed about some of these walkers. Hard to blame them, though, because these guys are ugly.

One last thing that I couldn’t really put into the things to note part, but doesn’t Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan voice sound a bit like Andrew Lincoln’s voice as Rick Grimes? It’s darker and deeper, definitely, but there’s a similarity, no? Listen to the trailer again, especially when Negan talks about there being rules and such.

Chances are I missed something easily obviously because I was looking for the subtle stuff, so if you spotted something in the trailer, drop a comment below!
