DVD Release Schedule: Justice League Vs. Underdogs [Video]

The DVD release schedule for Tuesday, July 19, is full of what most people would consider disappointments. Comic book movies and first person shooters top the list, but the king of rock ‘n’ roll and a disgraced president are also on the slate. If you opted to skip these movies in the theater, maybe a dollar and some change at the local Redbox or a digital download will be worth a few hours of your time.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

DC Comics has been trying to play catch up to their main rival Marvel in theaters for some years now. Hot off a successful Batman trilogy, Warner Bros. looked to capitalize by putting the “Caped Crusader” and the “Man of Steel” together in their first film. Despite the initial surge in sales, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to live up to many people’s expectations, both critically, and to an extent, financially.

Batman vs. Superman opened with an astounding $166 million total domestically according to Box Office Mojo. Adding in the international gate receipts, it looked as if DC had finally made a movie on par with the summer blockbusters that Marvel has enjoyed for some time. However, by the time the second weekend numbers were in, it was easy to see that BvS would have a difficult time hitting the $1 billion mark that some analysts had expected.

Poor word of mouth went a long way to dooming the film from the beginning. Critics rated BvS as a rotten. Its average score was a meager 22 percent. Pop Culture website Den of Geek’s review went a long way to summing up the overall narrative as it pertained to Dawn of Justice.

“Again a studio stands on the precipice of a layered marketing plan, and again the movie its sky castle is built on is every bit as hollow and empty-headed as an action figure.”

If there is one thing the DVD release has going for it, it is the fact that this is the definitive version of the movie. Extra footage has been added to the movie. The new version of the film has received an R rating. Curiosity alone should keep this version of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice at the top of the charts.

Underdogs

While everyone loves a great story about a team overcoming insurmountable odds to claim victory from a more talented foe, foosball rarely falls into that category. On this week’s DVD release schedule, Underdogs asks audiences to temporarily place that much importance on the table sport. This could prove to be a difficult task since it seems the distributors of the English language version of the film, The Weinstein Company, ultimately passed on theaters.

Despite having the voice talent of actors like Ariana Grande, Katie Holmes, and John Leguizamo, Underdogs was delayed several times in 2014. Then, just weeks before its scheduled August 2015 release, The Weinstein Company pulled it from the release schedule in theaters. Almost three years after the movie was originally made, Underdogs will be available for DVD and digital download.

While critics weren’t wowed by Underdogs, it has still managed to get a fresh rating of 67 percent. Common Sense Media mentioned that the humor doesn’t necessarily reach the level that most fans of animated features are accustom to but the message is solid.

If these two movies don’t satisfy curiosity, the DVD release schedule has other notable movies this week. This includes Elvis vs. Nixon, The Perfect Match, Miles Ahead, Demolition, and Killzone 2. If television is something you are more interested in, new seasons of Bitten, Orphan Black, Person of Interest, Royal Pains, The 100, and The Magicians will be available on Tuesday, July 19.
