National Pet Fire Safety Day, Get A Free Safety Pack And Clings For Pets

Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day, and it is a good time to discuss keeping pets safe from the hazards of fire.

From Fourth of July firecrackers and fireworks to backyard barbecues, cookouts, and house fires, the summer poses potential dangers to pets. Additionally, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) provides consumers a free pet safety pack, that includes a window cling or decal that alerts emergency responders that pets are inside. Requesting the free pet safety pack is simple, and you also have the option to receive ASPCA email alerts. You are not required to make a donation to order the free safety pack.

National Pet Fire Safety Day is a joint collaboration with the American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT Security Systems. The first National Pet Fire Safety Day was held in 2009, and the pet holiday has grown since. According to the AKC, the holiday aims to create awareness for the more than 500,000 pets affected by house fires each year. Check out the video below from 2009 that discusses the creation of National Pet Fire Safety Day.

This video is from 2015 and includes firefighters sharing tips for keeping pets safe. They discuss encounters they have had when responding to fires and discovering pets in the home.

AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson released a statement regarding the need for creating a safe environment for pets that includes a safety plan in case of fire.

“One of the hallmarks of responsible dog ownership is keeping pets safe and planning for unexpected emergencies, including house fires. Pet proofing the home, developing pet-friendly escape routes and alerting rescuers of your pets presence with ‘window clings’ is the best way to keep your four-legged family member from harm.”

Keeping pets safe from fire involves a two-fold strategy. First, adults must ensure that they aren’t engaging in activities that could cause a fire and harm pets. Second, adults must take steps to prevent pets from sparking accidental fires. Just like when a new baby joins the family, adults take steps by safety-proofing the home, pet owners must safety-proof their homes. This includes fireproofing and ensuring pets can’t accidentally spark fires.

Pet owners know that their pets are curious by nature. Dogs like to run, and despite our best efforts, many do run in the house at times. Cats are known for jumping, and their inquisitiveness can have them pawing at things. Open flames, candles, and even knobs on stoves can become potential fire hazards to curious pets. AKC Reunite provides a list of safety tips to help pet owners take a proactive approach to fire safety. ADT, who co-founded National Pet Fire Safety Day, also provides a list of pet safety tips.

National Pet Fire Safety Day is also a good time to discuss preparations for natural disasters. While there are many emergencies that can come up at any point in time, there are natural disasters that may strike without any warning. Many people prepare for the everyday emergency but don’t create plans for natural disasters.

The Human Society of the United States offers tips and resources for pet owners who want to ensure they create a comprehensive disaster plan for pets. The Humane Society also includes resources for finding pet-friendly hotels for those who might need to stay away from home.
