Goldberg On WWE Return: ‘They Haven’t Called Me To Be Part Of Any Roster’

After the big announcement that former WCW and WWE World Heavyweight Champion Goldberg was going to be involved in the WWE 2K17 video game, fans started to get excited, because they thought that his involvement in the game meant that he would be coming back to WWE. But, according to the man himself, nobody from WWE has called him to be part of Raw or SmackDown following the WWE draft on July 19.

During a recent conversation with 411Mania, the former WCW Champion said that Vince McMahon hasn’t contacted him about coming back, and, at this point, his only involvement with the company is through the video game, which is set to be released this coming October.

“WWE has not called me to be a part of any roster. My relationship with WWE stands with the video game and the video game only. If they want to extend an olive branch and pick up the phone, then I will make a comment on that once they do it. But prior to that, nothing’s been done.”

Several weeks ago, there were reports going around that WWE had reached out to a ton of former stars including Carlito, MVP, Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, and Goldberg, with the idea that they need big names to help fill the Raw and SmackDown rosters following the brand split. So far, Angle has said that he won’t be coming back to WWE until next year at the earliest, Jeff Hardy is still in TNA, and, as previously mentioned, Goldberg has said that WWE hasn’t contacted him.

Goldberg’s one and only WWE run ended up the spring of 2004. His last match was with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 20, and it’s remembered for all the wrong reasons, as it was a complete disaster. Both men were set to leave the company following the match, so neither of them cared about the quality of the bout. The match ended with Goldberg getting the win, and both men got booed out of the building.

The WWE 2K17 commercial seemed to suggest a Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg rematch at some point in the future. But, 2K isn’t in any way involved or informed of any of WWE’s creative plans. So, the “Suplex City” sign in the commercial was put there by 2K to create buzz. But, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a Goldberg vs. Lesnar rematch at some point in the future, possibly at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando next year.

In an interview with WWE.com, Goldberg said that he has several matches left in him, but he didn’t name any guys that he would like to face if he were to come back. Of course, as previously mentioned, Lesnar would be the obvious first choice, because the two men are certainly capable of putting on a better match than they did back in 2004.

Prior to WrestleMania 32, Goldberg’s manager suggested a match between the former WCW Champ and Roman Reigns, saying that Goldberg could remind the world what a real Spear should look like.

Goldberg has expressed interest in returning to the ring, mostly because he wants to show his son, who wasn’t born yet during his WCW and WWE run, what he used to do. He’s obviously still in fantastic shape, so he’s more than capable of doing what he used to be able to do.

In the past, 2K has been able to build relationships between WWE and guys who were in the game. They did it with Sting, and they did it with The Ultimate Warrior. So, it’s possible that they could do it with Goldberg.
