‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators Reveal The End Is Nigh

Each season of Game of Thrones leaves fans nearly catatonic, awaiting the conclusion of whatever cliffhanger has been forced upon us, but creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have now revealed that the series will soon be coming to a permanent end. The writing duo have been following the books of George R.R. Martin through the past six seasons as faithfully as possible, but Benioff and Weiss now say that they have also had their own ideas about how long the series would run and just how Game of Thrones would finally end.

As a series, Game of Thrones is nearing its end, says creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who have struggled with their decision to stay faithful to their original timetable for the series. The showrunners admit it’s difficult to even think about ending the series, especially when it’s still such a huge hit with fans, but they add that they would rather end Game of Thrones in the near future, while it’s still beloved by millions, than to allow it to die a long, lingering death.

“Like President Obama, we want to leave while all the people watching this show are really into it,” said Weiss. “Get out at a high point and not have it be, well thank god that’s over.”

Weiss’ partner was far more revealing, telling interviewers at a press conference following the Season 10 Game of Thrones finale that there definitely won’t be more than 75 episodes in the series. That leaves just 15 more episodes for the entire run of Game of Thrones. As each season has thus far consisted of 10 episodes, Benioff’s claim suggests that the final season will only have 5 episodes or, if he sticks strictly to the planned exodus, it may leave a final season with 13 to 15 episodes.

“It’s two more seasons we’re talking about,” Benioff said of the end of Game of Thrones. “From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70 to 75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now. What Dan [Weiss] says is really true, but it’s not just trying not to outstay your welcome. We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end.”

Much Like A Game Of Chess, Game Of Thrones Is Already Set Up For The Finale Play

“We’ve known the end for quite some time, and we’re hurtling towards it,” Benioff said of Game of Thrones.

While the showrunners may know exactly how Game of Thrones will ultimately end just two seasons from now, that doesn’t mean fans of the series have been left completely in the dark. In fact, Benioff reveals that we already know everything we need to know to predict how the series will end.

“Those last images from the show that aired [Sunday] night showed that. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is finally coming back to Westeros, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is king of the North and Cersei (Lena Headey) is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them.”

It seems like Game of Thrones is heading for a free-for-all and, at this point, it’s anyone’s game. As the ultimate conflict comes to a head, Game of Thrones fans may begin placing bets on the ultimate victor, but Weiss and Benioff caution fans about making any premature assumptions. There are still some wild cards in play, which may ultimately change the fate of Westeros.

For instance, what role will Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) play?

“The pieces are on the board now … We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it.”
