‘Master: God Of Noodles’ Finale: Did KBS Set Up K-Drama’s End In A Way That Every Major Character Could Die?

When Descendants of the Sun concluded back in April, the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) had the difficult task of producing a K-drama that could at least do well following up the blockbuster series. For those who do not know, though, it would be hard to fathom anyone who identifies themselves as a K-drama fan not to know given the series’ popularity, Descendants of the Sun purely dominated. Starring Hallyu actors Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo, the K-drama received plenty of promotion and hype prior to its airing, which resulted in it having almost an average rating of 30 percent in viewership across the board. Even today, almost two months after Descendants of the Sun has concluded, many K-drama fans are fervently following Joong Ki and Hye Kyo wondering if they are really together outside of their careers.

Nevertheless, KBS had a unique concept that centered on revenge and, believe it or not, noodle making. Thus, Master: God of Noodles took the time slot of Descendants of the Sun. In the beginning, it looked as if Master: God of Noodles would hold its own as it started out with seven percent ratings in viewership. However, it would only stay around that viewership rating throughout its 20-episode run.

Despite ratings not even reaching double digits, Master: God of Noodles has a devoted fan following that is decent in size. Also, the fact that the viewership rating is about the same every week means they are at least dedicated. This gives KBS the initiative to end Master: God of Noodles satisfactorily, and it seems they’ll have their fans on the edge of their seat as they have set up the drama to end such in a way that every major character can possibly die.

For those unfamiliar with Master: God of Noodles, which also goes by the titles Master of Revenge and Time of the Beast, it is a K-drama that mixes elements of revenge and food dramas. Chun Jung Myung (Reset, Heart to Heart) plays Moo Myung Yi, a superior noodle maker who wants to work for a popular noodle restaurant chain run by the “God of Noodles,” Kim Gil Do, played by Jo Jae Hyun (Punch, Assembly). However, Myung Yi not only wants to work for the popular noodle restaurant chain but wants to become the new “God of Noodles” because Gil Do only became popular because he killed Myung Yi’s father and stole his noodle-making expertise.

Nevertheless, every major character in Master: God of Noodles is in a position in which they could possibly end up dying by the finale. As a matter of fact, all the major characters can end up dying. Who are the major characters and what position are they in that may cost them their lives? There are technically five characters, and since Moo Myung Yi and Kim Gil Do are the lead characters, they’ll be explained last.

Note: There are spoilers ahead!

Kim Da Hae — Played by Gong Seung Yeon, Kim Da Hae is one of the noodle makers working in Kim Gil Do’s restaurant who has a very strong sense of smell. She becomes a noodle maker to find out who killed her mother. By a twist of fate, she happens to be Kim Gil Do’s illegitimate daughter.

Although Kim Da Hae finds out who killed her mother, she is able to move forward from the truth because of her “love of noodles.” She is the deciding factor in forcing Kim Gil Do to step down as Master Noodle Maker. Given the fact she is heavily centered in between the revenge war of Gil Do and Moo Myung Yi, she might become an accidental casualty, especially when it comes to Gil Do, who has killed numerous times before.

Park Tae Ha — Played by Lee Sang Yeob, Park Tae Ha is a childhood friend of Moo Myung Yi who becomes the bodyguard of Kim Gil Do. As such, he is also a lackey that is sent to do Gil Do’s bidding and, at times, dirty work. The only reason he chose to be Gil Do’s bodyguard is to find the person who manipulated his father, who was a drug addict, in committing a double murder.

Because he dropped his guard protecting Chae Yeo Kyung, he was able to find out Kim Gil Do ordered the hit. However, he must not blow his cover at the moment because Yeo Kyung’s life is also in danger. Playing a false front in Gil Do’s presence may prove fatal, especially if Gil Do catches him with Yeo Kyung whom Gil Do is trying to kill.

Chae Yeo Kyung — Played by Jeong Yoo Mi, Chae Yeo Kyung is a prosecutor investigating Kim Gil Do and the ring of corruption surrounding him. Motivated by the fact the people in the ring of corruption are responsible for the double murder of her parents, Yeo Kyung is trying to put away all the corrupt parties behind bars.

Unfortunately, Chae Yeo Kyung is the one who is in the most danger simply because she is taking on people much more powerful than her. She’ll need to depend on the justice system if she is to be able to take down those who are high on the social hierarchy, especially in politics. In the pursuit of justice, she would have died, or at least been captured in one situation, if it weren’t for Park Tae Ha.

Kim Gil Do and Moo Myung Yi — If anyone in this series is going to die, it will most likely be either Kim Gil Do or Moo Myung Yi. For the former, he had everything stripped away from him. He is no longer the “God of Noodles” of his restaurant chain and is no longer favored among people and fellow politicians to become a senator. Gil Do knows the reason for his “fall from grace” is because Myung Yi made it happen. Therefore, Kim Gil Do may end up getting himself killed trying to gain his former glory back.

On the other hand, Moo Myung Mi is in danger of dying simply because Kim Gil Do is a “beast” and wants to kill Myung Mi for taking everything away from him. If Gil Do is able to get back everything he lost, he’ll need to make sure Myung Mi is out of the way somehow.

Ultimately, we won’t know what will happen until Master: God of Noodles airs its penultimate episode and finale on Wednesday and Thursday respectively at 9:55 p.m. KST on KBS. For those who do not have access to Korean channels, the entire K-drama series can be streamed for free with ads, pending region, on both DramaFever and Viki.
