Oregon Mom Shoots And Kills Intruder She Found In Child’s Bedroom

An Oregon mother shot and killed an intruder she found in her child’s bedroom on Saturday night. The 33-year-old unidentified Portland mom came home with her two children to encounter a man, 59, in a bedroom.

According to a report from 11Alive, the Oregon mom called 911 after shooting dead the intruder. The woman told the police emergency dispatcher she had shot the man during 911 call. She was armed with a handgun and opted to use it to protect herself and her two children. According to Fox 8 News, the Portland mom fired at least one shot at the intruder, killing him on the spot.

The Oregon mother had entered the Portland home with her two children, ages five and 10, before spotting the intruder. No charges have yet been filed against the woman, the Daily Mail reports. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has noted the mother is cooperating with police investigators.

“This is a complete stranger and she had her two small children with her when she got home, a 2-year-old and 5-year-old and had a confrontation with the intruder inside her home. Certainly a very scary situation. She is understandably traumatized by what happened, as [are] her children, and we are going to help her with that side of things, as well,” Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson said, according to a WCVB News 5 report.

The children’s ages noted by the police office differ from multiple other media reports about the fatal shooting.

An autopsy on the 59-year-old intruder is expected to be conducted today. Once the next of kin has been located and notified, the intruder’s name is expected to be released to the public.

According to a report by KOIN 6 News a neighbor, Amber Murray, said a “few squatters” had been spotted roaming in and out of the home where the intruder was shot and killed, before the mother and her daughters had moved in.

“I know when the previous renters were there, there was a lot of mischief,” Murray added.

The home is reportedly located on Southeast 118th place in Portland.

This fatal shooting of an intruder is the second such incident in Portland in less than a single week, according to Portland Patch. Last Wednesday, a naked man was shot by a homeowner while trying to break into a residence. The nude intruder was later identified as former Detroit Lion Stabley Wilson II.

Oregon is a “Stand Your Ground” or “Castle Law” state, according to USA Carry.

Here’s an excerpt from the Oregon Statute.

“Use of force justifiable in a range of scenarios without a duty to retreat specified. Oregon Supreme Court affirmed in State of Oregon v. Sandoval that the law ‘sets out a specific set of circumstances that justify a person’s use of deadly force (that the person reasonably believes that another person is using or about to use deadly force against him or her) and does not interpose any additional requirement (including a requirement that there be no means of escape).'”

The 33-year-old Portland mom may have been a concealed carry permit holder or she could have kept a gun inside the home and grabbed it after encountering the intruder. Oregon is a “shall issue” concealed carry permit state. Residents, non-residents of bordering states, and legal aliens are permitted to apply for such a permit if they are at least 21 years old. The permits require a background check, training, and are good for four years.
