Liam Fee: Mom And Lesbian Partner Convicted In 2-Year-Old’s Brutal Murder

Liam Fee was found dead, the victim of a brutal assault, in March of 2014; his mom and her lesbian partner were immediately suspected in his murder. At the time Liam Fee’s body was found, his mom and her civil partner tried to blame another young child for his injuries and ultimate death, despite the fact that he was so badly abused that his injuries mimicked those suffered by car crash victims. His injuries were so severe that little Liam’s heart had actually ruptured from the trauma.

As Daily Mail reports, Liam Fee’s mom, Rachel Fee, 31, and her lesbian partner Nyomi Fee, 29, denied any involvement in the toddler’s death. Today, they were found guilty of Liam’s murder after a seven-week trial at the High Court in Livingston, Scotland.

During the trial of the death of Liam Fee, jurors heard testimony that the little boy (found dead at his home near Glenrothes in Fife) had suffered a broken leg and fractured arm. As he lay dying from his multiple injuries, his mom and her lesbian partner Googled “can wives be in prison together.”

Overall, 2-year-old Liam Fee suffered over 30 external injuries to his small body, said the pathologist who examined him after he was found dead.

Fee’s mom and her partner were found guilty of murder, but they were also found guilty of assaulting Liam Fee repeatedly for over two years as well as a plethora of other abuses against two more small boys.

Some of the incomprehensible charges the women were found guilty of included: imprisoning a child in a home-made cage, tying a child naked to a chair in a dark room where rats and snakes were reportedly kept, and denying the small boys bathroom access then forcing them to take cold showers when they couldn’t “hold it” anymore.

Over the course of the Liam Fee murder trial, it was brought to the attention of the jury that concerns for Liam’s welfare had been raised before. Nursery staff and a babysitter had reported concerns for the child’s well-being to authorities before he was found dead. One nursery worker, Marette Cunningham, told the media that the 2-year-old appeared to be terrified of his mom.

“He turned round and looked at her [his mother] and the feeling that you had was horrific. He was just frightened. In the whole ten years of being at this nursery, I’ve never, ever seen anybody looking at their mother like that.”

Another caretaker close to Liam Fee lamented what had been learned about the child’s life and death over the course of his trial.

“When he died we knew it was bad but we had no idea of the level it was actually at. It’s really heart-breaking to think we were sending that boy home to that every day.”

In addition to being convicted for the abuse and murder of Liam Fee, his mom and her lesbian partner were also convicted of his neglect. The pair reportedly left the toddler alone for extended periods of time in the period leading up to his death. They also failed to get him medical attention for his broken leg and arm, both of which would have been excruciating injuries.

Neither Liam Fee’s mom nor her lesbian partner showed remorse or emotion when their guilty verdicts were read. His father, Joseph Johnson, left the court crying.

Several jurors were also in tears when a video of the deceased toddler’s battered body was played for the court. Social media users were overjoyed at the verdict, although it was a bittersweet moment.

According to the prosecutor, Alex Prentice, Liam Fee’s mom and her partner were both guilty of “unyielding, heartless cruelty” in the tot’s death and had shown “callous indifference” to the boy’s suffering.

Liam Fee’s mom and her lesbian partner had reportedly been forced out of their home by angry neighbors months before they stood trial for the young child’s murder.

It was also revealed that the system had failed Liam Fee. Suspicions of abuse had been reported to authorities repeatedly before Liam’s death; his mom and her partner had even been investigated, but nobody found enough evidence to intervene and save the boy. According to the BBC, social workers admitted at trial that at one point Liam Fee “fell off their radar.”

According to the prosecutor, it doesn’t matter whether Liam Fee’s mom or her lesbian partner struck the fatal blow because they were working in tandem toward the same goal.

At this point, neither Liam Fee’s mom nor her partner have been sentenced in his death.
