Since news of the breakup of Johnny Depp’s marriage to Amber Heard broke, the media has come out with more information almost daily about what led to the disintegration of their relationship. Among the most hotly debated subjects on the topic is a fight the couple had on the night of May 21, a fight that appears to have been the trigger for Heard’s decision to file for divorce from Depp. The fight of that night also seems to comprise a significant portion of the foundation for her restraining order and charges of domestic violence against Johnny. Among the things being discussed by the public is the fact that officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) came to their home. The LAPD reportedly showed up at the couple’s condo after receiving a call from a third party whom Heard asked to call 911. Some have doubted her claims of domestic violence for several reasons, among them her failure to mention Johnny’s name to the police and her refusal to file a report when police offered her that opportunity. Today, E! Online is reporting on what Heard’s attorney has to say about that decision.

Johnny Depp has been married to the actress/model for about 15 months. She was granted a temporary restraining order based on allegations of repeated physical and verbal abuse by him. Reports of their last fight indicate that at some point she told a third party to call 911. Her request for a restraining order describes the argument, including claims that Depp pulled her hair and grabbed her face. Police have stated that Heard didn’t mention Johnny while they were at their home and that she declined the opportunity to file a police report. Today, her lead attorney Samantha F. Spector and co-counsel Joseph Koenig issued a statement about these choices by their client on that night. It read in part,

“Amber did not provide a statement to the LAPD in an attempt to protect her privacy and Johnny’s career… In domestic violence cases, it is not unusual for the perpetrator’s playbook to include miscasting the victim as the villain. In reality, Amber acted no differently than many victims of domestic violence, who think first of the harm that might come to the abuser, rather than the abuse they have already suffered.”

Vanity Fair also reported on the statement from Heard’s attorneys today, a statement in which they indicate that they and their client have always sought to protect the private lives of their client and Johnny Depp as much as possible. They also indicate that it has been their desire to keep the situation out of the media spotlight as much as possible, stating that if they had wanted media attention they could have served Johnny with the divorce papers at the opening of his new film, Through the Looking Glass, but that, instead, they sent a letter to Depp’s attorney the following morning.

“We took the high road. Unfortunately, Johnny’s team immediately went to the press and began viciously attacking Amber’s character. Amber is simply a victim of domestic violence, and none of her actions are motivated by money. Amber is a brave and financially independent woman who is showing the courage of her convictions by doing the right thing against Johnny’s relentless army of lawyers and surrogates”

Johnny Depp has not commented on the events of the last couple of weeks, but Depp’s attorney, Laura Wasser, has issued this statement on his behalf.

“Johnny is currently out of the country for work. He is unable to attend the hearing on this matter and has not heard Amber’s specific allegations against him. He nonetheless has every intention of staying away from Amber.”
