Should Elsa Have A Girlfriend in ‘Frozen 2’? Conservatives Say No

At the beginning of May, GLAAD revealed that no films released by Disney last year featured LGBTQ characters. According to Cinemablend, fans have been vocal about changing this and started an online petition in hopes Disney will agree to give Ice Queen Elsa, from the blockbuster hit Frozen, a girlfriend in the film’s sequel. It started with an online petition via change.org. The petition “Give Elsa a Girlfriend” needed 2,500 signatures and was just short of its goal until Twitter got involved. The hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlFriend for Frozen 2 began trending internationally, which gave new life to the petition for Frozen 2.

ET Online spoke with actress/singer Idina Menzel to get her input on the hashtag and details on Frozen 2. In the interview, Menzel stated that she supports the campaign 100 percent. Here is what she told ET reporters.

“I think it’s great that she’s stirring it up for Frozen 2. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out. No matter what, (Elsa) changed my life.”

In the first Frozen film, fans watched Elsa as she dealt with the loss of her parents, suddenly becoming Queen, and losing and then gaining control of her powers. Her journey does get dark and parts of the film paint Elsa as a villain. Her relationship with her sister, Anna, is the only thing that kept her from truly having a frozen heart. That’s a lot for a young woman to deal with. But at the end of the film Elsa came to terms with who she is and everyone in the kingdom accepted that. In Frozen 2, Chris Buck would like to take Elsa’s character a step further.

In an interview with Fandango, he explained his plans for the Frozen sequel.

“[In Frozen] she had such a dramatic journey, and at the end, she’s just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again. That’s what was really good about the short — we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality… you will see in the next one.”

Disney has covered LGBTQ topics on their channel but not in their films. So what can fans expect from Elsa in Frozen 2? Will it focus more on Elsa more than Anna? Or will the changes include giving Elsa a girlfriend? Well, some Christians would rather Disney to keep it a bit more traditional.

“Queen Elsa a Lesbian? Thinking about our children, this idea is frightening,” is the title to an article from online publication Right Wing Watch. It was written in response to the Twitter campaign #GiveElsAGirlfriend. CitizenGo had created their own petition #CharmingPrinceforElsa.

Kevin Swanson, a right-wing extremist pastor has always believed that Disney’s Frozen is insidious in nature. He believes the film is a “Satanic plot to turn kids gay.” On his radio show, One Place Ministries, he discusses why Disney wants to continue to demonize America’s youth.

“Anybody who has the guts to stand up against the homosexualizing of kids in the present day will be shamed for it, and that means that the homosexualizing of kids will be, I think, wholesale happening across this country in the next two, three, four, five, 10 years. Of course, Frozen, and is going to get Elsa a girlfriend, eventually. That’s the way you destroy sexuality. That’s the way you destroy an entire civilization. The entire social system of the United States of America is collapsing.”

“You have got to be sure that you have homosexualized four-year-olds and six-year-olds and eight-year-olds and ten-year-olds in order to destroy a civilization,” he added, “because the destruction of a civilization happens over two or three or maybe four generations max. In order to bring a civilization down, you’ve got to homosexualize the kids.”

What do you expect from Frozen 2? Does it matter if Elsa has a girlfriend or not? Or would you rather keep things traditional?
