Horrific: Mother kills, eats baby in Texas

In what appears to be the worst probable case of Post-Partum Psychosis ever, a Texas woman brutally murdered, dismembered and ate her newborn child.

The woman, Otty Sanchez, was a diagnosed schizophrenic and known to struggle severely with issues of psychosis, but the murder was obviously a huge shock to relatives and authorities. Like Andrea Yates before her, Sanchez heard voices and believes Satan influenced her. Scott Buchholz, father of baby Scotty and fellow schizophrenic, broke up with Sanchez last week. He is now calling for her execution.

“She was a sweet person and I still love her, but she needs to pay the ultimate price for what she has done,” said Scott W. Buchholz, who referred to his child as “baby Scotty.” “She needs to be put to death for what she has done.”

Buchholz, who was at a Whitesnake and Judas Priest concert the night his three-week old baby was murdered, added that Otty Sanchez should “burn in hell.”

Responders to the scene are unlikely to ever forget what they saw when they arrived at the house Sanchez and her two older children occupied. Baby Scotty lay dead- decapitated, face torn away and three of his toes bitten off. Sanchez was on a couch with self-inflicted wounds to the torso and throat and shouting that she’d “killed her baby.” The other two children in the home at the time of the brutal murder were unharmed.

Scarily, it looks like Scotty’s father may get his wish- Sanchez was charged with capital murder. A neighbor of Sanchez spoke to the AP regarding the woman’s state of mind and possible eventual recovery.

“…once she gets back in her right mind, she’s going to be devastated.”

Everyone says that, and the important distinction is that it wasn't standard PPD like you had, it was post-partum PSYCHOSIS. These women literally have psychotic breaks that make them completely insane and unaware of their actions. The only way this can be prevented is by better screening women at risk for the disorder which occurs in 1 out of 1,000 births.

its just so damn sad because that little boy didnt even have a chance to live. I think the lady should get the death penalty. That was just evil!!!! and unforgivable.

It's horrific. Really, really tragic. If a sane person did it, the death penalty would be appropriate. (I must disclose I'm opposed to it overall.) Wikipedia has an article on what distinguishes PPP from PPD- they should probably change the name to avoid confusion (medical professionals, I mean.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpartum_psychosis

Psychosis is a scary, scary thing as well. The act is unforgivable, but putting someone to death for illness is also wrong. What if someone had a heart attack and mowed down a kindergarten class crossing the street? Kids might die horrifically but the actions would be out of control of the person driving. I don't believe that the actions of the woman in the article could be construed as something she did consciously.

That said, I wouldn't be half surprised if Texas goes ahead and executes her anyway. But how we handle a situation like this now and in the future reflects who we are as a country. 1 in 1000 people is a low enough figure that this WILL happen again and again unless people realize what this disorder is and try to stop it.

do you think she used saly and pepper???

  6. Absolutely horrible.

In Texas, we execute men, women, children, retards, sane and insane. This woman's fate is sealed.

Having said that, I'm personally opposed to the death penalty under any circumstances (I don't believe anyone has the right to willfully take the life of another, be it the government or an individual). I will admit that this particular case tests the limits of that personal belief.

If you look at it from an objectivist, pro-death penalty point of view, the death penalty is supposed to act as a deterrant, and as a safety valve to flush out the worst of the worst from society. It doesn't matter the motivations of atrocities – you could argue that Hitler was chemically imbalanced (and it wouldn't be a tough argument to make). Does that mean that since he wasn't in his right mind that he didn't deserve the most harshest sentence that justice dictated? It doesn't matter the state of mind, and, again, from an objectivist standpoint, it's *more* important to flush out those who are genetically disposed to chemical imbalances that result in atrocities and murder.

Wasn't Andrea Yates in Texas? She drowned her 5 kids and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. She didn't get the death penalty. If it was up to me she would have and this psychopath would too.

CHEFBOYARDE – your comment is a cruel, disgusting attempt at a joke. Your pathetic.

I'm with you on this one Kim. Only those that work in the mental health field see how much those with psychotic mental health disorders truly suffer. Comparing this woman to Hitler is a poor comparison at best. Hitler wasn't hallucinating he was actively working towards a goal, while that goal was horribly atrocious it was based on his views and personal ambitions. This woman didn't have a child so that she could devour it, she was clearly psychotic which seems to be even more supported by the fact that she immediately mourned her act (attempted suicide) and additionally that she did not physically harm her other children that were in the home. Of all of the psychiatric disorders it is my opinion that psychosis would be the worst to experience. I also agree that in this situation the death penalty is totally inappropriate (and I support the death penalty myself for rapists, cold-blood murders-not during psychosis being the distinguishing factor, and child predators). This woman absolutely needs to be locked away for the remainder of her life, but in a mental health treatment facility, receiving treatment. Honestly, my guess is this woman actually would prefer the death penalty. I know that if I killed my child in an acutely psychotic state I would want to die, especially so if it was as horrific a circumstance as this. I truly pity this woman, her children, extended family and friends. I cannot begin to imagine what they are experiencing in the wake of this.

  9. I have never cried so hard when I heard the news. Babies are God's gift and anyone who hurts them in any way, I dont care how messed up they are deserves the worst.

I'm also personally opposed to the death penalty, but not because I think revenge killing is even necessarily unethical. Anyone who loses someone they love can understand bloodlust in a situation like this.

I'm also not very up on capital punishment in that I don't know exactly how weighted mental illness is (by law, not accounting a jury) but if the woman is truly as psychotic as she appears to be, then I'd class this a definite case of “by reason of insanity”- it couldn't possibly be gray. Whether she killed the baby by suffocating or by the horrific way she did shouldn't be a factor. Maybe it is, but it shouldn't be.

    Jul 28, 2009

Well said- I do understand Mark's point and what he was driving at, but whenever I read about people who suffer terrible psychotic breaks it makes me think how it must be like a horror movie for them. We know insanity exists and failures in treatment are the cause of these types of tragedy. It's got to be impossible to deter the truly ill from committing violent physical acts against others because they're essentially loaded weapons walking around. It's scary for them and scary for society but the death penalty in cases like this – just imagine if the amount of money and time and resource spent on one case like this was put towards finding and treating people before they go off, something might actually be prevented rather than mourned after the fact.

Something led up to this, if the father knew this woman had a mental problem why the HELL is at a concert. I am sure there were signs that led up to this. This is upsetting, Post-Partum Psychosis is no joke and to mix this with schizophrenic, someone should have been with her at all times. The doctors who were treating her should be questioned as well. This is a sad case, she should not be executed she need to go to a mental hospital for the rest of her life. The father should be charged as well.

While i agree with Kim Lacapria on some of the things she has pointed out, I personally believe in capital punishment. I am not a vicious, blood thirsty, inhumane individual, but justice will never be served as long as this woman is breathing. With capital punishment in effect, this world can get rid of the “bad people” (this is the only nice way I can put it at this time) and the crime rate would go down tremendously. Criminals these days have this mindset: If i can murder my worst enemy or in the Sanchez case, my innocent baby and get by with it with just a slap of a hand (just a few years hard time in a prison where I can eat for free, exercise, play racquetball, lounge about at the taxpayers expense) you get the idea…. then I'm going to go for it, (if that is the worst case scenario). Do i believe Otty Sanchez should be executed. YES. Why? She knew what she was capable of doing, she knew she was a schizo, she knew she had postpartum psycho schizo depressive disorder. And by no way am I trying to be cute. But yet she did nothing about it. didn't turn to her aunt, sister, brother, uncle, preacher, neighbor, husband, and say “hey, i am having delusional thoughts, i am thinking about slaughtering my innocent newborn and cannibalizing my innocent newborn, i need help and i need it now”. With her past medical history, she should have recognized and known the signs. She should have asked for help, her family should have recognized the signs and offered help. I believe the icing on the cake though, is this….Otty Sanchez refused to take her medications that she so desperately needed especially at the time when she really needed it the most. While I agree with Kim's analogy that someone driving down the road, can experience a heart attack, die and hit innocent kindergartners walking across a crosswalk at a school, It also depends on the situation and set of circumstances at hand. A person that experiences a heartattack, 99% of the time has no warning, but with Sanchez the warning signs were there. They were there from the very beginning. With that said, Otty Sanchez should be held liable for her actions. Her irresponsible actions. I am sick and tired of hearing she had a mental disease, disorder, whatever. She may have had a legit mental disorder, but for that poor innocent little baby who trusted his mother to take care of him, to love him and nuture him it is too late. I bet now she will seek help. Again, unfortunately, it is too late for the little one. And one more thing, has she heard of birth control? With her past medical history, i don't think it was wise to bring a little baby into her twisted world.

You are right on cindydr12. I am so sick of hearing “oh it was a mental breakdown”. This woman had a clear history of mental illness. She obviously had no business having custody of her children. The father should be smacked in the face or something. He knew that woman was crazy…so why go to a concert instead of making sure his babies were safe??? IDIOT. That poor baby…my heart breaks everytime I see or hear about this horrible story.

To the idiot chefboyarde, you are a sadistic heartless person to put a comment like that on here. GROW UP.

oh wow, this is really truly horrible.
i personally think she should be put to death for
what she put that poor baby through. its bad enough
to kill an infant, let alone do all the insane things she did.
this is honestly one of the most horrific acts of murder
    i have ever heard about.

nothing anybody can say, can manage to take up
for the crime she has commited. its horrible and a shame
that she did that to her own flesh and blood.
rather the “devil told her to do it” or not its still
wrong anyway you look at it.

This is ridiculous. This lady was a diagnosed schizophrenic. she has 2 other children. why is she having children? is she working? how is she paying to live? OH WAIT, OBVIOUSLLY SHE'S GETTING SOCIAL HELP AND HAVING YET ANOTHER CHILD.

WHY are we letting people have children without a license? this is ridiculous. why WOULDNT we kill this lady. whether she knows what she did or not, she still did it and will do NO good to society or her other children if she is returned to the public. ALSO, why should we pay to keep her in prison? what will that teach anyone?

  22. 3byage23

I have three children of my own and I cant imagine doing something like that to them but then again I dont have any mental issues. I feel sorry for everyone in this from the poor innocent baby to the family and including the women who did it. If she really had a break down and lost control of what she was doing, when she pops back into reality imagine how she is gonna feel, Its like waking up from a nightmare but it was actually reality. I couldn't even imagine that happening to me! I would probably want them to put me to death to but she has two other children that she needs to think about and probably wants to see them grow up. God is the only one who knows what exactly to do in this situation. God for give her! and bless everyone who was hurt by this horrible circumstances! Let that baby RIP, God bless his soul! I dont think she should die for actions that she wasn't able to control. And who are you to say that your tired of hearing that she was insane? This is the world we live in people. I think the hospital who sent that baby home with her should get in trouble, they knew of her issues. But I guess Im just looking for someone else to blame.

this bitch is sick and yes i called her a bitch, i have no respect for a woman that would do that to an innocent child who didnt ask to be part of her crazy ass life! and if she was so crazy why were the oler children un harmed? makes u think she may have been schizophrenic but i think she targeted the baby for some reason or another i think it had to do with the babies father. And why is it that she had any of the children in her mental state anyways??????

  24. cindydr12
    Aug 2, 2009

yes, i am sick and tired of hearing she was insane. She was insane, that is fact. this we know. no one in their “right mind” would do this to their baby. it doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that she is mentally sick and incompetent. it still doesn't change the ghastly outcome and the fact she refused apposite treatment. With this treatment, her baby may still be alive today. i'm also sick, tired and disgusted that anyone in their right state of mind, would think this is the world we live in, hey just deal with it. is this how you perceive things? Is this your way of saying it is okay because this is just the world we live in, shit happens? Unfortunately, yes this is the world we live in, it's not a dream. It's cold, hard reality. so wake up because i think you are dreaming. sick, demented people like her should not be allowed to co-exist in “this world” we live in. She doesn't deserve to live and she doesn't deserve a second chance. anyone capable of doing what she has done to her own flesh and blood could definetely do worse things to others she does not know. if people like her are not disposed of, yes disposed of; then whenever she is released from the insane asylum in the year 2020, what makes you think she wouldn't do this to someone elses's child. i don't know about you, but this world “i live in” is very important to me, my sweet child is important to me, my husband and family is important to me and i am glad they share this world with me. and yes, you are looking to fault or blame everyone else except the crazy psychopath that desecrated her sweet baby.

  26. 3byage23
    Aug 2, 2009

well Im not on here to argue with anyone on their opinions on this situation but God put everyone on this planet for a reason. Don't get mad at me cuz I speak the truth. I love my kids and my husband to but I cant stop God from doing his work. I dont live in fear like I use to. I can only pray and let my family know whats out in this world. I walk with faith everyday that my family will be okay. All I know is that your suppose to walk in love and not in hate. who are you to say when someone should die? everyone is a seiner and no sin is worst then the other in Gods eyes. Sorry if I made you upset. I will love you anyways, just remember life is to short as you see. Im sure you dont love your family any more then I love mine. I just dont think you should be talking about people like that, disposed of, like their trash? What, should we kill everyone with mental problems before they could harm anyone? Or maybe we should make some laws for certain people before this happens again. I am woke and Im not living in a perfect lil world like you. I know things like this will happen again and we should find a way to prevent it from happening but Im pretty sure when someone has no control over their actions and does something as terrible as this it will wake up a lot of people, family and friends of people who have a mental problems and at least try to stop this from reoccurring. Now there probably will be laws to have the hospitals take more actions before letting patients like her leave with their babies. I want this world to be perfect too but I dont think that will ever happen on earth but it will when my time is up and Im siting next to God like that lil boy. I pray we will learn from this situation and not fall and judge people that we dont know nothing about and only what we read. Its sad how people can have so much hate in their hearts. Please dont take this personal its just my one lil opinion.

  27. Ok…there’s no question this lady is sick and as a mother this story makes me sick but I also feel for the mother. Let’s look at the facts.

First of all she tried to get help a couple of days before but was released from the hospital – with her baby.

Then…the other children in the home were not her own. They were her sisters. In fact she was at her sisters house because she wasn’t well and that night she kept bringing her sister the baby for help because she was hearing voices. Her sister just brought the baby back to her. That’s the night that this happen. I feel like she was trying to get help but everyone turned their back on her. Metal illness is a terrible disease and it consumed her this night and for that I empathize and I think the system and this women’s family is what failed this poor innocent child.
