‘The Last Of Us 2’ Could Be Announced At E3 In June

Over the last few months, there has been a ton of speculation that Naughty Dog will begin working on the much-anticipated sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us after the release of their latest project, Uncharted 4, which is set to be released on May 10.

Now, according to the Christian Times, Naughty Dog may announce that The Last of Us 2 is in development at this June’s E3.

According to GamesRadar, Neil Druckmann, who is Naughty Dog’s creative director, has provided a timeline for The Last of Us 2, as well as a few ideas for the sequel to 2013’s game of the year.

In a recent interview, Druckmann revealed that he and his partner Bruce Straley were working on a few prototypes for The Last of Us 2 before they were directed to begin working on Uncharted 4.

“Before my partner, Bruce Straley and I, my directing partner, came on to Uncharted 4, we were working on prototypes for different ideas within The Last of Us universe. Our next focus is the single player Uncharted 4 DLC and then, once we have enough resources, resurrect all those prototypes; see where we’re at, see where the teams at, what they’re excited for and go from there.”

One of the ideas that’s been thrown out there is that the second Last of Us game will actually be set during the same time as the first game, but instead of playing through Joel and Ellie’s story, you’ll play as Marlene, who was the leader of the group known as the Fireflies in the first game. Basically, the idea will be that the story will be Marlene’s rise to power in the Fireflies group.

Of course, the best way to go for the sequel is to continue Joel and Ellie’s journey. Some believe that the ending to the first Last of Us, which saw Joel lying to Ellie about what happened to the Fireflies, was the perfect way to end their story, and that their journey shouldn’t continue.

There’s a chance that a Last of Us sequel would be poorly received by fans if it didn’t feature Joel or Ellie, as they’re two of the most popular characters in the world of gaming. But, there’s a chance that Naughty Dog decides to tell a completely different story in The Last of Us 2.

In an interview with PlayStation Magazine, the aforementioned Neil Druckmann admitted that he and Bruce Straley were considering creating brand new main characters for The Last of Us 2.

“When Bruce Straley and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2. We were brainstorming new main characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”

Back in February, there was a rumor that The Last of Us sequel would be called Days Gone instead of The Last of Us 2. But, even three months later, the Days Gone rumor has remained just that, a rumor.

This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will be a three-day event, taking place from June 14 to June 16. Typically, gaming studios announce their newest projects there, so with Uncharted 4 set to be released next week, it would make sense for Naughty Dog to announce that they’re currently developing the sequel to The Last of Us.
