Old Navy Twitter Ad With Black Woman And White Man Praised After Racist Comments Emerged

It was a simple ad that Old Navy added to their Twitter account on Friday, April 29. The Old Navy ad might have gone unnoticed by Twitter trolls if the people featured in the ad were all the same race. Yet since Old Navy added variety and an interracial couple to the ad — it went viral. First, it received racist comments and then the Old Navy ad was defended and retweeted by others.

In the ad, an African-American woman smiles as she looks at the camera. A Caucasian male with long hair has his arm wrapped around her waist as a cute, smiling boy gets a piggy-back ride from the man.

Old Navy used the photo of the three of them to promote their “Thank You Event,” which gave 30 percent off of Old Navy shoppers’ purchases for signing up for Old Navy’s newsletter. However, the ad received an undue amount of attention just because it featured a black woman and a white man.

As reported by BuzzFeed, the mere sight of a black woman and white man together in the Old Navy Twitter ad caused some people to go off the rails and proclaim that they would never shop at an Old Navy store again. Old Navy began receiving odd feedback on Twitter, with all sorts of reactions to the photo. Some blamed Old Navy for trying to promote an “anti-white” agenda while others likened it to child abuse.

Still, others took the criticism a step further and claimed that Old Navy was trying to promote a storyline that showed a missing African-American father that left a white man to step in and become the dad to the child in the ad.

“Absolutely disgusting. What’s next? Gender neutral bathrooms? Pedophilia acceptance propaganda?! Never shopping here again.”

“My family and I will never step into an store again. This miscegenation junk is rammed down our throats from every direction.”

“How’s that? Because I don’t like seeing anti-white propaganda?”

“Stop promoting miscegenation or else I’m taking my $$$ elsewhere!!!”

“What are you trying to tell us? That the black father was absent so a white man had to step in and play daddy? Pathetic, I’m sick.”

In response to all the hateful comments, people began tweeting photos of their interracial families and began praising Old Navy and the makers of Cheerios — a brand also known to feature interracial families in their ads.

Beyond uploading photos of their interracial families, folks also left positive comments defending Old Navy on Twitter.

Lots of people thanked Old Navy for a lot more than their thank you event and 30 percent off of clothing. They began to thank Old Navy for being more inclusive.

“Kudos to ! Just like The Donald, bringing the scared future “minority” to the surface!

“I should be hosting a for because they’re supporting inclusivity and ignoring ignorant people.”

love this ad This is what true love looks like and the new America! Love it or leave it, oh btw I love this picture

“Just because of the racist pieces of s*** commenting, I feel the need to run over to the

“All those mad Trump supporters.”

While all sorts of excuses are being thought up by some criticizing the Old Navy ad on Twitter and threatening to boycott Old Navy stores and their website, others are tweeting that love wins over hate.

This is one Old Navy sale that could go well beyond a mere shopping event. Those who agree with Old Navy’s bold move of using a photo that reflects the racial makeup of society will likely put their dollars where their beliefs reside and begin shopping away at Old Navy soon.
