Does ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Have A Victor Strand Problem?

Just a few days ago, it seemed the biggest threat with AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead was its overpopulation of angst-ridden teens. However, Episode 3 revealed a bigger threat – a potential new bad guy who goes by the name of Victor Strand.

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information about Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Last week, I suggested AMC’s latest zombie apocalypse series, Fear the Walking Dead, had a teenage problem. But, what a difference a week makes! Episode 3 of Fear saw the sullen teens take on their parents and demand they go on their first ever supply run. And what an adventure they had.

With Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) as acting babysitter, the group went ashore to salvage what they could from the wreckage of Flight 462. Besides them finding usable items, they managed to come across Alex (played by Michelle Ang and listed as “Charlie” in the cast list on IMDb for Fear The Walking Dead) as she was being chased by a massive herd of infected. When they head back to the boat–with Alex and the dangerously burned, Jake, in tow–Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) didn’t want to let Alex and Jake on board. As a compromise, they were towed behind Victor’s boat, the Abigail. Still not happy with this, Victor eventually cut the pair lose, presumably to let them drift and die at sea.

But that was the last straw in an episode where Victor Strand showed time and again that he was a control freak. Yes, it is his boat, but does that really mean he has the final say on everything that happens on his boat? According to Strand, it does. However, with seven other people on board, just how long will it be before they snap and throw Strand overboard? If you watch the teaser video for episode 4 of Fear The Walking Dead, that just might happen sooner rather than later.

Right from the very first introduction of Strand in Season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead, fans knew there was something shady about him. Considering the only person he really gets along with is Nick (Frank Dillane) the junkie is fairly telling as well. In Episode 3, we got to see more of Strand making shady phone calls and telling Madison (Kim Dickens) that he has a safe house in Mexico that he conveniently forgot to tell everyone about.

Over the course of Episode 3, it becomes apparent that Strand is not used to compromise. And, in the zombie apocalypse, this is a very dangerous characteristic. If it doesn’t get you killed, it will likely turn you into one of the bad guys as it has been proven time and again in Fear’s companion program, The Walking Dead.

So which way will it be for Victor Strand? Will he maintain his hold over everyone on board the Abigail, thus risking the chance he will become someone like the Governor or Negan from The Walking Dead? Or, as the screen capture from the teaser video indicates, will everyone get tired of his controlling ways and throw Strand overboard?
