Americans Want Tyrion Lannister For President But Refuse Westeros’ Political Setup

With the elections fast approaching, surveys are becoming prevalent, and in a recent poll conducted by Survey Monkey, a well-loved character from Game of Thrones emerged victorious – Tyrion Lannister. The Americans have spoken and they would rather have Tyrion as President of the United States over Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Tyrion and Bernie Sanders garnered the same number of votes at 24 percent. Clinton nabbed the second spot with 20 percent of total votes. Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen came third with 14 percent. She was followed by Trump with 7 percent. Tyrion’s sister, Cersei, only got 1 percent of the total votes. Four hundred participants participated in the survey.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Sanders and Trump were mostly supported by their parties as opposed to Tyrion who got equal “bipartisan” support from both the liberals and conservatives.

Apart from being chosen as the Americans’ preferred leader, Tyrion was also voted as the people’s most favorite Game of Thrones character. Peter Dinklage’s character raked in 39 percent of the total votes. Joining him in the top five are Daenerys and Stark kids Jon, Arya, and Sansa.

Nonetheless, even if the former Hand of the King received much support from the poll participants, it does not mean that the Americans would prefer to be governed the Westerosi way. Seventy-five percent of the respondents still believe that the U.S. has a better political setup than the Seven Kingdoms.

Since the pilot episode of the Game of Thrones, many fans have been rooting for Tyrion. In a place where one’s size and sword skills are the measures of bravery, Tyrion stands out because of his sharp wit. His deformities do not hinder him from exhibiting intelligence when the situation calls for it.

In a piece entitled “What Makes Tyrion Lannister Such a Compelling Character?” Slate lauds Tyrion’s kindness to people who experience ridicule.

“He is capable of extreme cunning and takes calculated measures against his enemies, but is also capable of sympathy and genuine kindness toward those whom he perceives as helpless or outcasts like himself.”

The publication also acknowledges Tyrion for he manages to retain his humor despite his past unfortunate experiences.

“This is one person who has been through all kinds of highs and lows in his life, but his spirit remains undaunted, unbroken, and fearless. He has known immense power in his homeland and has also been a bound and chained prisoner in a foreign land. He is regularly taunted and ridiculed due to his size and deformities. He is threatened and beaten up for his sharp, acerbic tongue. However, none of that ever tames his spirit (or tongue) and he retains a sense of humor throughout, which is pretty darn impressive.”

Earlier this month, a team of mathematicians from Macalester College conducted a network analysis of more than a hundred Game of Thrones characters. The study declared Tyrion as the true protagonist of George R.R. Martin’s sprawling epic.

“Tyrion is the character that everyone loves. I think he’s clearly fighting the just cause. Even when he kills his father, you instantly understand,” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, once told the Irish Times.

Show creator David Benioff also believes that one of the reasons why many favour Tyrion is simply because it’s easy to relate with him. Even if everyone loves Jon Snow, not all could be heroes, he said.

Game of Thrones Season 6 returns this Sunday on HBO and viewers have to watch out how Tyrion will govern Mereen. While it’s true that he could sell ice to an Eskimo with his cleverness, will it be enough to win the faith of the people Daenerys left behind?
