Selena Gomez Reveals The Truth About Her Rehab Stint

Selena Gomez is revealing the truth about her past rehab stint in a candid new interview with GQ magazine.

Gomez opened up about her highly-publicized visit to at least one rehabilitation facility during a new interview feature with the publication, where Selena denied that her time in rehab was to help her to overcome substance abuse issues, as some reports suggested.

“First off, this is something that everyone always wants to fixate on,” Selena told GQ in the candid new interview about her past struggles, clarifying that her diagnosis of lupus and her mother’s “very public miscarriage” were the two reasons why she opted to take some time away from the spotlight and enter rehab in 2014.

“I needed time to just be okay, so I had to cancel my tour,” Selena said, also telling the magazine that she “was going through leukemia” at the time it was reported that she had entered rehab for treatment, though the site clarified that Gomez was likely mistaken and actually referring to receiving chemotherapy.

“I went to two different locations for those treatments. It’s really frustrating, because I am 100 percent allowed to have that,” Gomez told the magazine, admitting that she “[doesn’t] think it really matters” why she entered rehab treatment two years ago.

“I don’t ever really like to sit and dwell on what that experience was,” Gomez said, “Was it fun? No. Is it fun to have it? No.”

Selena Gomez also got candid about her continued struggle with lupus in the new interview, where she told the touching story of how she told a sick fan at a children’s hospital the story of her illness before she decided to make it public.

“There was this kid that wouldn’t look me in the eye at all, I wanted to get his attention,” Selena Gomez revealed of a past visit to a local children’s hospital, revealing that she told the young fan that he could ask her anything he wanted in order to interact with him.

“He asked me, ‘Have you ever dealt with anything like this?’ And I said, ‘I have lupus. I was in the ICU for two and a half weeks.’ And it was the first time that he looked at me,” Gomez confessed, admitting that the fan was actually the first person she told about her diagnosis outside of her close circle.

Selena’s denial that her rehab stint had anything to do with substance abuse comes after a slew of reports speculated that Gomez had entered treatment due to issues with drugs and alcohol.

Radar Online incorrectly claimed in 2014 that Gomez has entered treatment due to issues with prescription drugs.

“Her friends and family became increasingly worried that there might be a serious problem with Selena,” the site alleged at the time.

“She was exhausted. Selena was smart enough to understand that she needed to take control of her life,” an insider close to Gomez said of her rehab stint in 2014. “It just got to a point where she needed to get out of Los Angeles, get away from ‘the scene’ and the pressures of Hollywood, to also get away from those who had, admittedly, become a bad influence on her.”

“Selena needed to take the opportunity to work on herself,” Radar Online‘s source continued of Gomez’s rehab treatment. “She realized she needed help.”

However, a representative for Selena confirmed to the site at the time that while Gomez had, in fact, “voluntarily spent time at Meadows,” her admittance to the facility was “not for substance abuse.”
