Kelly Clarkson To Record Duet With ‘American Idol’ Runner-Up La’Porsha Renae?

Could Kelly Clarkson be readying a new duet with fellow American Idol contestant La’Porsha Renae?

After the big American Idol finale on April 7, Season 15 runner-up La’Porsha Renae spoke out about her admiration for Clarkson backstage at the show, where she admitted that she was hoping to hit the studio with the show’s very first winner as she starts work on her debut album.

“I hope that I get to collaborate with her,” La’Porsha told press when asked about a possible duet between herself and Kelly according to Billboard, admitting that she believes their musical styles would blend well on a powerhouse duet.

“Kelly Clarkson definitely reminds me of Motown. She’s pop, but she’s also very, very soulful,” Renae said. “She can just about sing anything she wants, so… that would be a huge blessing.”

While Clarkson has yet to speak out about whether she’d be willing to hit the studio with La’Porsha, she’s certainly no stranger to an American Idol duet.

Back in 2002, Kelly teamed-up with Justin Guarini for the track “Timeless” and also recorded “You Thought Wrong” with Tamyra Gray for her debut album, Thankful. Kelly also enlisted the help of former judge Kara DioGuardi for “The Sun Will Rise,” a track on her 2011 album Stronger.

The original American Idol has also made no secret of her admiration for Renae over the past season of the singing show.

Kelly Clarkson had high praise for the singer when she served as a guest judge on the show back in February, even telling Renae after she covered Rihanna’s “Diamonds” that she believed she was going to win the whole show.

Kelly revealed that she was backing La’Porsha to be crowned the final American Idol again ahead of the series’ grand finale on April 7, tweeting out that she would be casting her first ever vote for the singer. “I have never voted for anyone on @AmericanIdol not even 4 myself BUT I will be voting for @laporsharenae tonight,” Clarkson tweeted. “I need her future record!”

But it wasn’t just during the finale, which Clarkson did not attend due to the impending birth of her second child, where Kelly Clarkson tweeted a whole lot of love for La’Porsha.

Back in February, after La’Porsha stunned with a performance of “Proud Mary,” Kelly joked on the social media site that if La’Porsha wasn’t crowned the fifteenth and final American Idol that there was “something seriously wrong with America.”

“Okay if La’Porsha Renae doesn’t win Idol there’s something seriously wrong [with] America!” Kelly Clarkson wrote on the 140-character site earlier this year. “I mean, goodness! I stood up in my house, that’s right!”

Renae then replied to Kelly with a sweet message of her own, writing in reply to Clarkson’s tweet, “OH MY GOSH!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Such an honor!! Wow…. #IdolTop24.”

La’Porsha’s admission that she’s hoping to duet with Kelly Clarkson comes just days after Billboard confirmed that both she and winner Trent Harmon have both signed lucrative recording contracts following their stints on the singing show.

The site reported that Harmon has signed a recording contract with 19/Big Machine Records, while Renae will be releasing her debut album with 19/Big Machine/Motown Records.

“Because of the overwhelming fan demand and success of the farewell season of American Idol, we have made the decision to sign both the winner, Trent Harmon, and runner-up, La’Porsha Renae, to exclusive recording agreements,” American Idol mentor and Big Machine Label Group founder Scott Borchetta revealed to Billboard earlier this week.
