Nikki Reed Attends Independent Spirit Awards With Ian Somerhalder, Talks Getting Belly Button Pierced At Age 8

Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder were definitely one of the best-looking couples on the blue carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday night. Nikki really embraced her own independent spirit by rocking a beautiful Boho gown, and she came to the event with a pretty impressive accessory on her arm: The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder. Nikki’s personal style has come a long way since her days as an eight-year-old wild child with a belly button piercing—that’s right, Nikki’s parents let her get her belly button pierced when she was a second grader.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the dress Nikki Reed wore to the Independent Spirit Awards was a blue, floor-length Etro design with an intricate pattern on the sleeves and bottom pleats. The gown also featured a peek-a-boo cutout on the neckline. Nikki wore her hair in a messy side fishtail braid that perfectly complemented her Bohemian-chic attire.

Instead of wearing a boring black tux, Ian Somerhalder decided to rock a dark blue plaid jacket with dark wash jeans and a white dress shirt. The Vampire Diaries star skipped wearing a tie and accessorized with a brown belt instead.

Ian and Nikki were photographed getting pretty cozy while they enjoyed dinner at the show. Clearly, the honeymoon phase isn’t over for the gorgeous couple.

Nikki Reed’s skin was absolutely glowing at the Independent Spirit Awards, and she recently shared a few secrets about what she does to make her complexion such perfection. The 27-year-old Twilight star doesn’t rely on wacky celebrity skincare fads like vampire facials that seem painful and invasive—she takes a kinder, gentler approach when it comes to taking care of her skin.

During her recent self-directed photoshoot for Byrdie, Nikki shared a few of her best beauty secrets. According to the Sleepy Hollow star, she likes to make her own face scrub using all-natural ingredients.

“I just use a grape seed oil and sea salt, and I put lavender or peppermint oil, just a few drops, and I mix it all together,” Reed revealed.

The actress said that she’s a big fan of using rose hip oil as a moisturizer, and it’s very important to her that her beauty products and cosmetics don’t contain any ingredients that are potentially harmful.

“I’ve been using a lot of Whole Foods makeup, because when you start to realize how much lipstick and stuff you ingest by the time you are old and gray, it’s kind of scary,” Reed revealed. “It’s pounds and pounds, so we better know what we are putting into our bodies, and by the way, topically as well, what’s going on our skin.”

For her Byrdie photoshoot, Nikki based a few of her looks on legends of the silver screen like Audrey Hepburn. She even tried out the My Fair Lady star’s baby bangs.

Nikki Reed might look like a slightly more glamorous version of the girl next door now, but she used to be rather daring when it came to trying out trends like body piercings and wild hairstyles. Nikki says that her mother gave her a lot of freedom to experiment with her look starting at a very young age.

“I was the only third-grader with magenta hair. I had my belly button pieced when I was 8 years old, and I had two nose rings.”

However, Nikki Reed eventually grew out of her wild child ways, and she says that she’s now a big fan of the way women dressed in the ’70s. You can definitely see this in the gown that she chose for the Independent Spirit Awards—it’s a modern take on a retro style.

During her interview with Byrdie, Nikki didn’t reveal whether she’d be the type of mom who would let her 8-year-old daughter get her belly button pierced, but Nikki might have to start thinking about how she will parent her kids. Earlier this month, Ian Somerhalder told Entertainment Tonight that he and Nikki Reed are “absolutely” trying for a baby.
