‘Highly Haunted’ Antique Bible That ‘Pulled Owner By The Hair Down The Stairs,’ Up For Sale On eBay For $167,000

An antique Bible, believed to be possessed by rowdy poltergeist spirits that pulled the owner down the stairs by her hair, has been listed for sale on the auction site eBay for $167,000 (£120,000).

The leather-bound Bible, reportedly dating back to the early 1800s, was put up for sale on eBay by a man identified as Fred from Harrington on the Cumbrian coast, south of Workington, UK.

Fred is offering the haunted item for sale with a disclaimer that he accepts “no responsibility for any poltergeist activities” that the ghost-infested Bible might bring into the buyer’s “dwellings.”

Fred explains on eBay that “This book is highly haunted and after getting a couple of psychics examining it, I’ve been told that spirits are attached to this book, therefore I accept no responsibility for any poltergeist activities that this Bible might bring into your dwellings, and I’m not to be held accountable to any incidents of the sort.”

He obtained the “highly haunted” holy book in 2011 from an unnamed woman who inherited it as a family heirloom from her grandparents. The woman alleged that the Bible was possessed with spirits that caused eerie poltergeist activity in her home. The woman told Fred that the spirits caused doors to swing and slam shut, opened cupboards, rattled cabinets, moved furniture, stomped upstairs in the dark.

“There were doors opening, cupboards opening, stomping, someone walking upstairs.”

The woman took a final decision to dispose of the book after the spirits grabbed her and pulled her by the hair down the stairs in the night, leaving her bruised and shaken.

Spooked by the supernatural events in her home and convinced that the antique Bible was behind the paranormal incidents, she asked Fred for help.

Fred visited the woman’s home, removed the book and “cleansed” the house with a potent mixture of prayer and holy water. He claims that the ghostly events in the house ceased after he removed the book and conducted an exorcism to “cleanse” the house of the spirits.

“I prayed and sprinkled holy water all around the house and commanded evil spirits to leave,” Fred said.

But Fred, who at the time lived with his family in the U.S., was unwilling to share living space with a haunted Bible. So he kept it in his unoccupied property in Cumbria. But three and a half years later, when he returned to his home in the UK, he asked the woman if she wanted her Bible back but she didn’t even want to talk about it, Fred said.

“I asked [my friend] again if she wanted the Bible back and she didn’t want anything to do with it, she didn’t want to talk about it,” he said.

Still unwilling to have his family, including an infant, share living space with a spirit-possessed Bible, Fred moved it to an empty room in a nearby church and decided to put it up for sale on eBay for £120,000 (about $168,000).

He declined a susbsequent offer of £50,000 for the book because he was convinced that the novelty of a haunted Bible published in the early 1800s was worth more than that sum.

“[Spirits] attach to [objects] if they were in love with the valuable object to them while alive,” Fred explained, according to the Daily Mail. “They don’t want anyone anybody near it. They cause things to frighten them or harm them so they keep it up, that’s my understanding. I know its valuable not just because of its date because its antique, because it’s got spirits attached to it.”

“I know people are interested in that sort of thing,” he added knowingly.

The Bible has about two weeks left on eBay during which it can be purchased by interested collectors of haunted items for only £120,000.
