Kathryn Edwards Opens Up About Drug Overdose, Suicide And ‘RHOBH’

Kathryn Edwards may be new to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but she’s learning that she actually has plenty of things in common with the original wives. While Kathryn may never have met Kim Richards face-to-face, she was shocked to hear about the other ladies’ discussion about Kim’s addiction. While Edwards may not have known what the ladies went through last year, she decided to open up about her father’s own struggles with substance abuse. According to a new Bravo report, Kathryn Edwards is now opening up even more.

“No one wants to talk about the subject of addiction — be it alcohol, drugs, sex, food, gambling etc … but it’s a reality in most people’s lives. We all know someone who has a loved one — or themselves — who battled addiction,” Kathryn Edwards points out, adding, “We tend to hide it as a society, protecting those we love from public scrutiny and judgement. No one benefits from that… addiction is an illness and should be treated as such.”

Of course, Kathryn could be spot on with this statement, especially since some of the wives have hidden some of Kim’s antics over the years. Richards herself filmed the show while she was under the influence, but her co-stars may have experienced more drama with her that never made it on television. For one, her co-stars may have talked to Kim around the time she was arrested at the Beverly Hills Hotel for being intoxicated, and she may have reached out to friends after she was arrested for shoplifting this past summer.

While Kathryn’s story doesn’t include shoplifting at Target or getting drunk at the Beverly Hills Hotel, it does involve her father’s suicide. Edwards reveals that she was forced to step up as a role model for her siblings.

“My father was an alcoholic and drug addict. He wasn’t the everyday drinker… he was a binger. He self-medicated with those things because ultimately what was wrong with him was depression and manic behavior. He went through Hazelden, a great treatment center, twice — but it didn’t save him. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in January 1978,” Kathryn Edwards reveals.

“It forever changed my family. My siblings and I are who we are because of what we endured as children and the loss of our dad. I became a survivor. I made it my job to take care of everyone in my family, to be the strong one, to make a better life and honor the promises I made to my father when I was kid developing into a young lady,” Edwards reveals.

While Kathryn Edwards is opening up about her personal story, many viewers are wondering how she’s feeling about the drama that’s unfolding. Since Edwards doesn’t know much about the drama that happened last year, Yolanda Foster is clearly very upset with Lisa Rinna for bringing up the Munchausen accusation in front of the girls and viewers. And while Kathryn has called Erika Girardi a liar for not speaking up when asked about her conversation with Yolanda, she admits that she doesn’t understand everyone’s perspectives.

“I’m watching the dynamics of this all unfold right now, too… trying to understand all of the different views and opinions. Buckle up, it only gets more interesting,” she reveals.

She hints that the drama will only get worse from now on as emotions will fly high. And the preview for next week’s episode does show that the drama will start affecting the group, including Eileen Davidson and Lisa Vanderpump. Fans have to tune in next week to learn about this new development.
