As the Mega Millions jackpot continues to grow, more people are playing the popular lottery game. Powerball is the most popular, multi-state lottery game, followed by Mega Millions. Though the last drawing didn’t result in any jackpot winners, it did show us the importance of adding the Megaplier option to your ticket. Two tickets matched all five white balls: one in California, the other in Colorado. While the California winner won $2.2 million instead of the typical $1 million prize due to California’s pari-mutuel setup, the Colorado winner won $4 million due to having added the Megaplier option.

The odds of winning Mega Millions are better than they are for Powerball, and this fact has helped increase Mega Millions popularity. There are nine ways to win Mega Millions including the jackpot prize that consists of matching five white balls with winning numbers from 1-75 and the one gold ball or the Mega Ball with the winning number from 1-15. When paying Mega Millions, you can choose your own numbers to play, or purchase a ticket with an Easy Pick. Easy Pick Mega Millions tickets consist of computer generated, random numbers. The odds of winning the Mega Millions’ jackpot are the same if you pick your own numbers or purchase an Easy Pick ticket. The odds are 1 in 258,890,850.
The value of the Mega Millions jackpot varies with each drawing and those who choose to receive their payouts in a lump sum, cash advance will receive a lowered amount than those who choose the Mega Millions annuity option. Taxes are taken out and winners need to pay both federal and applicable state taxes on their winnings. The remaining prizes vary in price from $1 to $1 million and these amounts are multiplied if the Megaplier option has been added. The Megaplier option only applies to non-jackpot prizes. The odds of matching all five white balls minus the Mega Ball are 1 in 18,492,204. It’s important to note that not all states offer the Megaplier features so check with your local state lottery or retailer to determine if the feature is available. Mega Millions Megapliers are for two, three, four, and five times and the Megaplier is drawn live with the regular winning numbers’ results.
Mega Millions jackpots reset to $15 million after someone wins the jackpot and increases by $5 million each draw if no one wins. In cases of increased ticket sales, the jackpot can increase beyond increments of $5 million, resulting in larger jackpot amounts. The jackpots run on an estimation and it isn’t until the drawings conclude that the accurate amount of the jackpot is determined.
