Texas Couple Accused Of Enslaving Nigerian Woman

A Texas couple has been arrested after authorities in Houston say they committed crimes associated with modern-day slavery. CBS News reports that a 38-year-old Nigerian woman is the victim in this shocking case.

Police allege that Chudy and Sandra Nsobundu forced the woman into slavery after luring her to their home with the promise of paying her $100 per month. The victim told authorities that she was never paid for the duration of two years, during which time she was forced to work as a maid and nanny. That’s not the only sad detail in this case.

The New York Daily News reports that the unidentified victim was allegedly beaten and abused by the Texas couple. The allegations against the couple indicate that they treated the woman like a slave and treated her like she was less than human. The 38-year-old alleged victim told authorities that she was not allowed to take hot showers and that the only milk she was allowed to drink was milk leftover from the children’s cereal bowls. She was also denied access to a bed and was reportedly made to sleep on the floor in the Texas couple’s home.

If you think this is an isolated incident and that slavery in the United States is a dead concept, think again. Earlier this year, a Queens, New York, woman was arrested on charges associated with slavery. She has been accused of holding children as slaves in her home for approximately six years. Not only were the children forced to do house and yard work for that span of time, the woman allegedly forced the little girl to give her full body massages — one lasting approximately five hours.

Last year, a California man was arrested on various charges after he allegedly kept a Nicaraguan woman as a sex slave for a year. Eulogio Constantino-Sanchez is accused of forcing the woman to live in his closet during the year-long term of enslavement. Like the woman in this latest story out of Texas, the victim told authorities that she was lured to the man’s home with the promise of work and “a better life in the U.S.”

In 2007, a millionaire couple was arrested and accused of slavery in a case that involved at least two victims. The couple were accused of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves in their home, paying them close to nothing while forcing them to endure physical and mental abuse. The alleged enslavement of the two Indonesian women lasted more than five years. The two victims alleged that they were punished severely, and through truly bizarre means. One of the women were allegedly forced to eat 25 hot chili peppers at a time as a form of punishment. Another was forced to take 30 showers in three hours. Neither of the women were allowed to sleep on a bed, being made to sleep on mats on the kitchen floor in the home.

As for this latest case out of Texas, social media appears to be fascinated. Comments on Twitter and Facebook all appear to express shock and disgust at the details that have come to light about the couple accused of modern day slavery. Meanwhile, the couple has appeared in court since their arrests. If they’re convicted of the crimes they are accused of committing, they could end up in prison under federal convictions and even be ordered to pay reparations to their alleged victim.
