Hoax: Disney’s Darkwing Duck Not Making A Come Back, Fans Outraged By The News

News of Darkwing Duck’s return to the small screen took the internet by storm yesterday when fans from around the world shared that Disney XD will relaunch the terror that flaps in the night in 2018, leaving many Darkwing Duck fans wondering why it will take so long. Today, however, it was revealed to be a hoax.

TV Overmind shared the supposed announcement from Disney XD.

“Our new series will bring that same energy and bumbling crime-fighting spirit that fans have come to love about Darkwing Duck. We’re also going to add a gritty look that this generation of kids love. It’s our goal that fans of old and new will enjoy the new Darkwing Duck.”

Although the details were sparse, many fans of the series took to the internet to debate which characters of the series would make a return and if Darkwing Duck’s return would pave the way for other beloved series, such as Ducktales and Chip & Dales Rescue Rangers. In addition, the reveal of a “gritty look” had many wondering what that means exactly, if the characters will receive new designs, or if the action will lean toward the darker side, or something else entirely.

Despite the excitement over the announcement, many fans had their dreams crushed when i09 revealed that the announcement was not only false, but it was the result of someone reporting on an April Fool’s joke from about a year ago. Fans were outraged that the news was not only fake but that they were fooled by an old April Fool’s joke. i09 revealed the error by updating the article in the simplest way possible.

“After Decades, Disney Resurrects Darkwing Duck – [Update: No, It’s Not]”

Despite the massive let down to fans and the cruel rehash of the April Fool’s joke, some good news has developed from the unfortunate announcement. Although Disney XD will not be rehashing the Darkwing Duck series in a grittier manner, a new comic book series has been confirmed by the New York Daily News and is expected to launch in April. The comic book series will see the return of Aaron Sparrow and James Silvani and will be published through Joe Books.

“Writer Aaron Sparrow and artist James Silvani, who both worked on Boom! Studio’s version of the comic book in 2011, will return as the main creative minds for the series.”

Although a new comic book series featuring Darkwing Duck is not exactly what the fans want, it may be the return they need.

Although the announcement was not real, the influx of excitement across the internet and cries of sadness as it was taken away the very next day may coerce Disney to reconsider rehashing the series and returning it to its original glory.

Despite the letdown, fans have seen Ducktales return to the video game world in the form of Ducktales Remastered for the Wii U, which became an instant hit. There is always hope Darkwing Duck could be remastered for a current console, potentially leading into a resurgence of Disney favorites coming back to life on the small screen.

Although Darkwing Duck fans are nearly all grown up and potentially have families of their own now, the nostalgia from the great series and its counterparts has lived long inside the hearts of the fans. Rumors pop up from time to time and excitement runs rampant at the thought that they may share the adventures with their children while reliving their childhood through the new installments of the cartoons. Other series, such as Goof Troop, for example, were considered wholesome action with a moral at the end of each story. The biggest worry of such a resurgence of the series is that they will get a similar makeover that Teen Titans Go has or be turned into a 3D animated movie such as the Smurfs or Yogi Bear

Besides Darkwing Duck, what other classic Disney cartoons would you like to see make a comeback?
