Celebrity Fans Pay Tribute To David Bowie, Including Marilyn Manson, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, And Lorde

Fans all over the world were devastated to hear the news of David Bowie’s passing, and until now, some refuse to believe the sad reality. As reported yesterday, Bowie succumbed to his battle with liver cancer on January 10, 2016 at the age of 69. Two days prior to his death and on the day of his 69th birthday, David Bowie released his last album, Blackstar.

The death of Bowie came as a shock to many, as no one really knew, except his closest friends and family, that he was suffering from cancer for over a year. As news of his death spread, many fans, including musicians and others in the entertainment industry, paid their respects to Bowie by sharing messages on social media.

One of the fans who penned a tribute to Bowie is Brian Warner, more popularly known as shock rocker Marilyn Manson. Manson wrote a moving tribute via Rolling Stone. The entire tribute can be found on the website, but here is an excerpt.

“…All of my nostalgia, instantly turned to awe. I was hearing him sing about fiction as a mask to show his naked soul. This changed my life forever.”

“Every song of his was a way for me to communicate to others. It was a sedative. An arousal. A love letter I could never have written.”

“…he has found his way to the place that equals his untouchable, chameleon-genius beauty. The black star in space, that only HE belongs.”

“This crushing moment of fear and loss can only be treated the way his music has affected everyone who was fortunate enough to hear and love it.”

“Let’s NEVER let go of what he gave us.”

Mick Jagger, the frontman of The Rolling Stones, also wrote a short message about David Bowie on his Facebook account and shared a picture of them together.

On her Facebook account, Lorde wrote that she woke up with “a tender head” after downing a cup of Japanese whiskey when she learned of Bowie’s death. The songstress also said that she feels selfish talking about herself, but said that it’s like therapy.

“That’s who he was to all of us. He was a piece of bright pleated silk we could stretch out or fold up small inside ourselves when we needed to. Mr Bowie I guess right now we have to hand this up for a minute.”

Back in 2014, Lorde shared meeting David Bowie for the first time in an interview with Rookie.

“To have someone like that tell you that listening to you felt like listening to tomorrow. I was like… I could creatively die and just be happy forever.”

“It was super cute, though – for some reason we were holding hands and just staring into each other’s eyes and talking, and I was like, this is David Bowie’s hand, what am I doing? It was insane. A beautiful moment.”

“That night something changed in me — I felt a calmness grow, a sureness. I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit.”

Sir Paul McCartney also talked about Bowie through his blog.

“David was a great start and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world.”

“His star will shine in the sky forever.”

Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s wife, talked about how Bowie is like family and was also a “father figure” to her son, Sean Lennon. As Billboard reported, John and Yoko only had a handful of close friends, and David was one of them. After John Lennon’s death after being gunned down in New York, Bowie remained close to Yoko and would even be the one to pick up Sean from his boarding school. Sean also got to hang out with David at his Geneva recording studio.

“For Sean this is losing another father figure. It will be hard for him, I know. But we have some sweet memories which will stay with us forever.”

Here are other musicians who tweeted about David Bowie.

Before his death, David Bowie worked on a music video for his song “Lazarus,” which is said to be a “parting gift” to his fans, as his producer said.

Bowie also worked on a stage play entitled Lazarus starring Michael C. Hall, which premiered in December 2015. Director Ivan van Hove shared that Bowie did not want to postpone the premiere of the production.

“It was incredibly painful to watch. He came to the rehearsals and walk-throughs as often as possible. And stayed, and I saw how much effort it was taking.”

“He put up an incredible fight. He really didn’t want to die.”
