‘Supernatural’ Spoilers Suggest It’s Time To Set Lucifer Free

Supernatural has been diving back into biblical lore, or, more accurately, pre-biblical history with the story of the Darkness and the form of Amara that Darkness has taken. Throughout the eleventh season, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester have been racing around in search of a way to put Amara back where she belongs, only to find that there is nothing available to help them. In the end, it seems the worst foe the Winchester brothers have ever faced may be their only saving grace.

Are Sam And Dean Going To Make A Deal With The Devil?

The mid-season finale left off with a tense situation and many unanswered questions. It also dropped hints that the remainder of the season may herald the return of Castiel and, even more importantly, the freeing of Lucifer from his cage.

In fact, as the most recent episode left off, Lucifer had secured his escape, while fooling Sam with one of his typical deceptions. As it turned out, the visions Sam mistook for heavenly assistance from God were really just more of Lucifer’s tricks, employed to seduce Sam into doing exactly what he did do.

As confident and as arrogant as ever, Lucifer readily offers up a proud confession.

“See Sam, the Darkness descended, the impact on Hell was massive, the cage was damaged. Through the fissures I was able to reach out. It wasn’t God inside your head, Sam. It was me.”

It seems that Dean now has to worry about multiple foes threatening the world as we know it, all while God’s sister is running around using murder as a way of getting her older brother’s attention. Yet, Amara still assures Dean that she’s no threat just before she ominously vanishes.

Supernatural Spoilers Ahead Suggest What Must Follow

Right off the bat, Amara made some promises, or perhaps they were prophecies, considering her nature. In any case, the word is that Supernatural will see some romance for Dean, and maybe the sister of God will even make good on that first suggestion she made to Dean.

“You and I will be together… we will become one, why wouldn’t you want that?”

What about Castiel (Misha Collins)? It seems God is planning to hitch a ride inside the vessel that Cas has made his home. The promo for the next Supernatural episode, “The Devil in the Details,” hints at Castiel’s return, but also suggests that he won’t be alone. As Cas pulls his shirt open, the words “I am coming” can be seen carved into his chest.

Not to leave Sammy out, it seems he’s going to have to make the deal he wiggled himself out of several seasons ago. Both the mid-season finale and the promo have dropped subtle hints that there’s really only one way Sam will be able to get free of that cage once and for all.

To make matters worse, Lucifer really rubs salt in the wound by telling the younger Winchester brother that he’s been alone the whole time. He says to Sam that God was never with him and, making matters worse, suggests that he is the only hope of salvation for Sam and for the world.

Could there be a more desolate thought?

The Supernatural writers seem to be plotting out one Hell (pun intended) of an epic battle, if things go where they seem to be headed. God in Castiel’s body, Amara mixing it up with Dean, and Lucifer wearing Sam’s meat suit could definitely lead to a wild battle royal, but where will that leave Castiel and the Winchesters, once the dust — and the darkness — settles?
