Meg Ryan Talks Aging In Hollywood: ‘I Love My Age, I Love My Life Right Now’

It’s hard to believe that Meg Ryan is 54-years-old, but she is, and she is loving it!

Over the years, Ryan has learned a thing or two about being in the spotlight and aging in Hollywood. Ryan revealed one of her biggest life lessons during a recent interview with Porter for the magazine’s Winter Escape 12 issue, which hits newsstands on Friday, according to E! News.

“There are more important conversations than how women look and how they are aging,” Ryan said before admitting, “I love my age. I love my life right now. I love what I know about. I love the person I’ve become, the one I’ve evolved into.”

The You’ve Got Mail actress stepped behind the camera for the first time this year to direct the upcoming film Ithaca. She said that while she used to be “scrappy as hell,” she feels “easy” with the way her life is going now.

“In my life I’ve been scrappy as hell, but I feel easy with things now,” Ryan said. “I think that comes with age. We get stuck in these conversations about looks and hair color and our roots. It’s interesting and funny for five minutes, but it’s not that interesting.”

Although Meg Ryan confesses she loves her life and the way she looks, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t fallen victim to the Hollywood scrutiny.

“There’s a lot of hatred in the world today — it’s so easy to judge. Imagine being a hater. How stupid!” she continued. “My women friends are not sitting around talking about… well, sometimes there are conversations like that, but the people I value talk about kids growing up, what kind of world they are going into, what we are eating, what we are breathing.”

Ryan continued the interview by talking about how she views fame as a “condition” rather than an “affliction.” She said fame was “definitely something I have had an evolving relationship to. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t want to be separated out… Fame is so cheap. Actually it’s not cheap, it’s privacy that is expensive.”

Ryan then went on to talk about the growing use of social media and how she feels that people can now relate to celebrities because everyone who uses a social media account, such as Instagram, has an audience that knows private details about their lives.

“Instagram and all that stuff is a lot of fun, but everybody has an audience now and that’s new. I think people can now relate to the idea of strangers knowing about them: sometimes that’s fine and sometimes you are misunderstood,” Ryan said. “Sometimes there’s misinformation.”

Meg Ryan recently split from her longtime boyfriend, singer John Mellencamp. In August 2014, People Magazine reported that the pair had decided to end their relationship and go their separate ways after three years of dating. Sources told the magazine that it was the distance that ultimately led to their relationship failing. However, the two remain civil with one another and appear to still be friends. In fact, Ryan even hired him to write music for Ithaca.

“He’s the perfect kind of songwriter for this story. He’s world class,” she said of her ex-boyfriend. “There’s not one speck of music that’s not his. He’s got some kind of magic touch.”

Although Ryan is taking a break from romance, she said she is happy with the way her life is now, and she is focusing on her children and is not looking to rush into another romance.

“I’m with my life right now in a way that I adore, with my kids and my world,” she said.
