Robinson Cano Trade Rumors: Seattle Mariners Deal With New York Yankees Possible?

Robinson Cano trade rumors have become a hot topic for Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees fans. These Robinson Cano trade rumors stem from a report at SB Nation that claims the All-Star second baseman wants out of Seattle. The source of these Cano rumors is reportedly a “long-time friend” of Cano, so Mariners fans need to keep that in mind when reviewing the quote attributed to John Harper of the New York Daily News.

“One long-time friend who spoke to [Cano] recently says the second baseman is not happy in Seattle, especially with a new regime in charge there now, and that he’d love to somehow find his way back to New York.”

Is there any real basis to these Robinson Cano trade rumors? Neither the Seattle Mariners nor the New York Yankees have commented officially on these reports. Nothing has come from Cano’s agent just yet either. This would suggest that there might not be a lot of truth to the rumor itself.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a story popped up about Robinson Cano that turned out to not be true. There have been many stories to come out of New York after Cano spurned the Yankees to sign as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners. Immediately after the signing, stories from the New York media surfaced about Cano being tough to play with. None of those stories had come up while Cano was with the Yankees.

Since signing his 10-year, $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners, Robinson Cano has played two full seasons at Safeco Field. In 313 games and 1,339 plate appearances, Cano has a.300 batting average and a.807 OPS. He has averaged 18 home runs, 80 RBIs, 80 runs scored, and that.300 batting average since signing with Seattle. That includes 21 home runs during the 2015 MLB season.

Cano still has eight years and $192 million left on his current deal in Seattle. Even if the trade rumors about Cano wanting out of Seattle turned out to be true — and this is not a suggestion that there are facts behind them — that would be a huge contract for a team to take on. It’s easy for some writers to link him right back to the New York Yankees as well, especially with how much the franchise has struggled with replacing him at second base.

The bottom line to these Robinson Cano trade rumors could be that the New York Yankees have the money to spend on an All-Star second baseman. The franchise really wants to put a big name at the position again, and it would certainly seem like an easy solution to re-acquire Cano. With a new general manager in Seattle (Jerry Dipoto), it might even seem possible to some Yankees fans. The reality seems a bit further away than any of these rumors wants fans to believe.

While not impossible for a deal like this to happen, it remains highly improbable that the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees would agree to a trade involving Robinson Cano. During the Major League Baseball offseason, it is not rare for a rumor to surface that doesn’t make sense when the facts are explored. While it’s certainly possible that Cano is experiencing some frustrations with his new club, a source only known as a “friend” of his doesn’t hold a lot of weight.

At some point, a reporter will get in the ear of Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto and ask about the Robinson Cano trade rumors. It is at that point where some light might be placed upon the situation and some facts lent to the rumors.
