Nicki Minaj: Understanding Her Complex Relationship With Drake, And Why She Was MIA On Social Media

Nicki Minaj is no doubt one of the most successful women in hip-hop, and this year, she has had to put up with a lot. Starting with the feud between her boyfriend, Meek Mill, and Drake, it is most probably at a level where it’s beginning to affect her relationship with Meek.

This is not only because of the fans, but also considering that Nicki Minaj and Drake have a complex history. Delving a bit into that, Drizzy has been smitten by Nicki ever since the beginning of his music career. As a matter of fact, he included lyrics about marrying Minaj on his first album, Thank Me Later, in 2009. The following were the lyrics as highlighted by Capital Xtra.

“I love Nicki Minaj. I told her I’d admit it. I hope one day we get married just to say we f***ing did it. And girl I’m f***ing serious. I’m with it if you with it. Cause your verses turn me on and your pants are mighty fitted”

This sparked dating rumors. Later on in 2010, Nicki Minaj invited Drake on stage during her Hot 97 Thanksgiving Thank You concert and shared a kiss with him on stage at the end of the event. And while on an MTV2 Sucker Free Countdown, Drizzy confessed that he had always been in love with Nicki Minaj, saying, ” I’ve always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she’s always just looked at me as, like, her little brother”. A year later, Drake tweeted the following message to fans.

“Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and dont stare at her too long. She’s finally mine.”

Nicki retweeted the message and added, “Yes, its true. Drake and I tied the knot.” However, she later on revealed in an MTV interview following the release of “Moment 4 Life,” a song by her and Drake that had a wedding themed video, that they were just fooling around. This was Nicki’s statement, according to Rap Up.

“Obviously, Drake and I, we’ve played around so much with the whole marriage thing and stuff like that, so people have come to be kind of intrigued about us and it’s where we’re shooting the video together”

That pretty much sums up the complex Nicki and Drake relationship. Fast forward to current events, and the feud between Meek Mill and Drake is not showing any signs of ending. However, Meek is no longer pro-active in it, and understandably so, as the beef had initially started to negatively impact his career as fans grew weary of his weak response to Drake’s diss tracks and flooded social media with hilarious memes of Meek’s diss lines.

That said, the feud between the two men seems to have taught Nicki Minaj a lesson on how to use social media wisely. Couple this with the scathing chiding Nicki got from fans after she posted a video of her waving a wand at a woman in a wheelchair to Instagram, telling her to walk, it is most likely that she has experienced too much negativity from social media as of late. Although, she later explained in a tweet that the person was her friend on a scooter and was not in fact disabled, the damage had already been done, and may have caused her some distress.

Overall, with all the drama being brought into her life by social media, it seemed like a great idea for Nicki Minaj to take a well deserved break from it.
