Gwen Stefani Talks About Her New Emotional Single ‘Used To Love You’

Gwen Stefani shocked her fans by releasing the emotional single, “Used To Love You,” on the heels of her divorce from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. Since the single came out, fans and the media have pointed out that the song is about Rossdale. When Stefani first debuted the song at a concert, she admitted that she was going through a rough time, and that this new song was about heartbreak.

At the time Stefani, told the audience the following statement.

“I’m talking about pain and love and my real life, and I just want to share a song that I wrote recently. This song is really special.”

Aside from her initial comments about the song, she’s stayed away from commenting about the subject matter outright, but has gone on record to say that she’s happy her fans support her, and is thankful for the positive energy. The singer told People magazineabout the song, “It’s funny when people try to go deeper into a song that’s already, like so spilling my guts. What else can I say?”

She continued and discussed why this song is so rare for her, despite already singing about heartbreak in her career. “I’ve never put music out in real time where I’m really going through stuff. I only wrote that song a few weeks ago.”

In the case of No Doubt’s hit 1995 album Tragic Kingdom, the material was written so far in advance before she had to perform it.

Stefani performed her new song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and appeared to be emotional, which just added to the fact that this was a song that she wrote only a few weeks ago, as opposed to a year ago.

Stefani seems to be living in the pain of her split from Rossdale rather than letting it sit with her. The two were married for 13 years and dated for 20 years.

Despite her heartbreak with her ex-husband, it’s said that the divorce has been very civil. As the Inquisitr has reported, the details of the couple’s divorce has been released.

CBS News reported that Rossdale took less than half of their joint property. Rossdale is not getting any child support from Stefani, either.

According to Hollywood Life, an inside source made the following comment about Stefani’s headspace.

“Gwen is very, very happy that the divorce is going as civil as possible. It was heartbreaking and is still heartbreaking going through this whole process, but the fact that Gavin has been very adult in settling everything between the two and really been a man about it has been very therapeutic for Gwen’s healing. She looks at this easy divorce with little drama being the best possible scenario to finally move on with her life.”

With all of this new life experience under her belt, Stefani decided to scrap her third solo album while she was hard at work, and instead went for an entirely new sound.

“It didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel fulfilled. That record with Benny was done that way because I had just given birth and had just started The Voice and felt like I should do something in music, but what I was going to do? There wasn’t enough time. So I tried to make a record where I was just kind of involved — which is how a lot of people do it, but it didn’t work for me.”
