Planned Parenthood demonstrators are definitely not fans of Carly Fiorina. Over the weekend, protesters pelted the former Hewlett-Packard CEO and current GOP presidential hopeful with condoms. The disruption of Fiorina’s University of Iowa football game tailgate rally by the Planned Parenthood group was caught on tape.
According to an ABC News report, during Carly Fiorina’s meet and greet session with potential Iowa voters, protesters from the women’s health advocacy group did their best to interrupt the candidate’s message to supporters. Dressed in pink, donning contraception costumes and waving pom-poms, Planned Parenthood protesters chanted at the presidential candidate, “Carly Fiorina offsides for telling lies” and “women are watching and we vote.”
The ruckus caused by the Planned Parenthood demonstrators caused Fiorina to take cover in an area surrounded by supporters and security. However, at some point, condoms were tossed at Carly and her supporters. According NBC News, to it’s unclear if the plastic wrappers were thrown by any member of the anti-Carly Fiorina group. However, sources say they were handing them out to attendees at the tailgate party earlier.
Planned Parenthood has been the target of Republican criticism for some time, and some speculate the GOP may threaten a government shutdown if the organization is not de-funded. At the center of the political impasse are secretly recorded video tapes released online by the anti-abortion group, Center for Medical Progress.
Fiorina, who is the lone woman GOP candidate for the White House — and a cancer survivor — emerged as a top contender after the second Republican debate. There, she spoke out against Planned Parenthood and used the sting videos to bolster her case.
“Anyone who has watched this video tape, I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, to watch these tapes,” she said. “Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.”
However, Planned Parenthood supporters and other entities accused Carly of fabricating her story, that the tapes do not show what she claims. Moreover, no evidence has emerged that the tapes are actually part of Planned Parenthood. Still, the feisty candidate maintains her position.
“They’re trying to have a conversation now on a technicality about a videotape. Interestingly, no one has denied that babies are being butchered for their body parts in Planned Parenthood clinics and elsewhere. No one has denied that.”
No one was reported injured in the alleged condom-throwing incident in Iowa by Planned Parenthood, but both groups — supporters and demonstrators — got their points across. Fiorina said the controversy has sparked discussion.
