Pastillas Girl Update: ‘It’s Showtime’ Is Upping The Stakes In The Battle To Beat AlDub Ratings

The Pastillas Girl phenomenon is heating up, and It’s Showtime may have a big plan to pull ahead of Eat Bulaga’s AlDub drama.

It’s Showtime introduced their Pastillas Girl in response to the popular noontime drama between star-crossed lovers Alden and Yaya Dub. The second-rated It’s Showtime has found some success, helped in part by the girl’s built-in audience.

Now there may be a plan to grab an even larger audience. The Manila News reported that It’s Showtime has planned a free concert at the Araneta Coliseum for its fans, one that could push it over the top.

Played by Angelica Jane Yap, the Pastillas Girl was known for her viral instructional cooking videos, including a very popular one showing them how to make pastillas de leche and yama. As the Manila Bulletin noted, many fans already knew and loved Yap when she came to the show, where she is seen going through dates to find a suitor.

AlDub has been crushing its competition in the ratings so far. The Pastillas Girl is solidly behind Eat Bulaga both in ratings and tweets, with the first ever date between Alden and Yaya Dub generating more than 12 million tweets last weekend.

As GMA Network reported, AlDub’s first date even approached Manny Pacquiao for popularity in the Philippines.

“Powered by the AlDub nation, the long-running noontime show posted a rating of 43.1 in Mega Manila according to AGB Nielsen, a new high for 2015.

“That number puts the 36-year-old program in rarefied air, as it has reached the level of Pacquiao fights.

“The pound-for-pound king’s last exclusive fight on GMA-7 against Chris Algieri last November drew 43.8 rating, less than a point above the AlDub number.

“Pacquiao’s fight against Mayweather last May, which was simulcast over three different networks, drew a 28.4 rating on GMA-7, 12.7 on ABS-CBN, and 3.3 on TV5 – a total rating of 44.4. That was just 1.3 points higher than Eat Bulaga’s Saturday episode.”

It’s Showtime itself may not see Pastillas Girl as competition to AlDub. Showtime co-host Coleen Garcia recently said she thinks both programs are doing a good job and are not necessarily trying to grab the same audience

“One thing that I actually pick up on is that I’m happy that there are two noontime shows that are doing their very best to make people happy,” she told Pep. “Because, at the end of the day, it’s really about the audience. It’s really about the fans.”

“The good thing about all of this is we’re two different shows and we’re trying very, very hard to make our fans happy,” she added.

But if the concert proves to be popular enough, the Pastillas Girl could soon be approaching AlDub for popularity.
