‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Will Navigate Between The Zombie Threat and The Human Threat [Video]

AMC has released a brand new sneak peek video for Season 6 of The Walking Dead, which will premiere on Sunday, October 11. Let’s have a look at what is in store for Walking Dead fans after the exciting and game changing Season 5 finale.

WARNING: This article contains speculation and potential spoilers for Season 6 of AMC’s The Walking Dead as well as spoilers about previous seasons. If you have not yet watched all available episodes, please proceed with caution.

AMC’s promotional video opens with the scene from the Season 5 finale showing Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh) giving the green light to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) to kill Pete (Corey Brill) after he slaughtered Reg Monroe (Steve Coulter). Steven Yeun (who plays Glenn Rhee) calls it the moment when two tribes merge together. With Deana relinquishing her belief that all should stay safe within the walls of Alexandria, that only the walkers should be killed, she acknowledges that Rick may be more experienced in this sort of situation. However, while Deanna may be of this belief, it still leads to conflict within Alexandria.

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh) must learn to live together in season 6 of AMC's The Walking Dead

However, Greg Nicotero (who has directed Episode 1 of Season 6), tells AMC in the video that the “idyllic lifestyle of Alexandria is gone” once Rick’s group joins it. This is due entirely to the fact that Rick’s group brought the troubles of outside the safe zone, inside with them. The Walking Dead’s co-executive producer, Denise Huth, explains that there will certainly be conflict between the people of Alexandria and Rick’s group thanks to their differing viewpoints on the world. The fact that the people of Alexandria are in a position where they are less able to survive in the outside, walker-infested world, puts them at a huge disadvantage. It’s also dangerous for those around them, including Rick’s group. Although there will be conflict, ultimately, Rick’s group will be trying to bring the people of Alexandria to a place where they can understand the true danger they are in by being ignorant of the world outside.

Danai Gurira (Michonne) says the group is eager to find a safe place to settle down in; one that won’t eat or threaten them like other communities they have come across in previous seasons. As the other executive producer on The Walking Dead, Dave Alpert, points out, there will be a sense of distrust in Rick’s group based on these experiences; but, in the end, they do keep trying to find the safest place for them in the post-apocalyptic world they now live in.

Morgan (Lennie James) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) get to know each other again in season 6 of AMC's The Walking Dead

While a lot of the discussion in this video centers on the group dynamics in Season 6 of The Walking Dead, Lennie James points out something interesting about his character, Morgan. Since the outbreak in Season 1 of The Walking Dead, Morgan has only ever been responsible for himself and his son. Then, when his son died, Morgan was only responsible for himself. Now, he has entered Alexandria and he is surrounded by people. This will be a struggle enough for Morgan, but, on top of that, he will also have to learn to live with people around him who are in conflict with each other.

As well as the threats between different human groups, there is the ever present threat of zombies, or walkers, as they are called in The Walking Dead. Greg Nicotero talks about how, in Season 6, the characters will have to “navigate this world between the zombie threat versus the human threat.” He goes on to reveal, “In the beginning of Season 6, we sort of elevate both of them.” As Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) points out in the video, “the threats get larger, the threats come in ways you don’t expect them to, the threats come in ways you don’t think is possible.”

Upon the closing of this Season 6 teaser video, Andrew Lincoln says fans should expect every episode of Season 6 of The Walking Dead to be “like a season finale” before going “off the chain.”

The Walking Dead returns to AMC with Season 6 on Sunday, October 11, 2015.
