Bring Your Bible To School Day — Public Students Step Out In Faith

Are public school students allowed to bring the Bible to school? Certainly teachers no longer have the freedom to teach from the Bible. God and prayer have been thrown out the doors and firmly barred from the public school system for quite some time now. Does that mean the students have lost the right to read the Bible or talk about God during free time?

No, it does not. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, students not only have the right to bring the Bible to school, but also to pray individually or in a group, as well as partake in religious discussion.

The Times-Picayune reports the Christian group Focus on the Family has begun a new event called “Bring Your Bible To School Day.” The first annual event took place last October with 8,000 students participating. This year, children will bring their Bibles to school on October 8.

Many teachers and even principals may be unaware that students have the right to read the Bible at school. Focus on the Family has created a Facebook page with resources for children and parents interested in participating in the Bible event. They have even created a memo that students may download on a cell phone or print out to show anyone who objects to the presence of the Bible.

Popular Christian rock band Newsboys have released a message regarding this Bible event. Watch the video below.

A column in the Jackson Free Press by public high school teacher Lynne Schneider addresses the issue of religion in school. Schneider’s opinion is that God is still in school. He is with all the believers who walk through the doors every day.

“I know God is there because I see him come in with students and fellow staff members. I see students pray silently in the cafeteria or read Bibles. I hear announcements for our student-led prayer group, and I hear students have deep conversations about their beliefs.”

“I also know that, as a teacher, I am allowed my own private prayers and can even be part of a Bible study for staff that is voluntary and outside school hours. Our public schools are full of religious people who don’t leave their beliefs at the door. I am grateful that we live in a country that recognizes every individual’s right to free expression of religious beliefs. It’s too bad that so many people forget that barring public schools from supporting one religion protects freedom for all religions.”

When students bring the Bible to school, they are not only practicing their right to freedom of religion, but even more importantly, they are taking a stand in the name of Jesus Christ and sharing his word, the Bible, with others who are interested.
