Miley Cyrus: The VMA Haters And The MAC Ad Drama

Miley Cyrus is no stranger to controversy, and in the last few weeks, she’s wrangled more than even her share. The superstarlet is known for headline-grabbing, attention-seeking stunts and envelope-pushing antics, but her recent gig hosting the VMAs ruffled more feathers than normal. E! Online is calling Miley Cyrus’ recent wardrobe malfunction “Nipplegate 2K15,” and it’s easy to see why. The never-shy Cyrus slipped a nip on live television during her last wardrobe change.

Proving that American society has come a long way since the infamous nip slip that spawned the term “wardrobe malfunction” in the first place (who can forget Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl halftime boob back in 2004), this time around, the complaints were comparatively few. Miley wasn’t wearing a pastie or a Janet-esque nipple shield, either.

Those who were offended by Miley Cyrus letting her boob hang out took to Twitter and Instagram to let Miley know just how upset they were.

Then, a whopping 20 of them took their complaining to the FCC. For the most part, the public has found these complaints pretty hilarious.

“MTV has aired a clip of Donald Trump and immediately afterward Miley Cyrus appears with both middle fingers up. It is clear they are putting the clips back to back to relay a message.”

“I only watched about 10 minutes, and it just so happened to be right when Miley Cyrus ‘accidentally’ exposed her breast on-air. This is not expectable.”

“Miley Cyrus is a VERY TROUBLED CHILD and I can not believe what she was able to get away with on this show. Seems like she is in the news everywhere doing disgusting, perverted and lewd things. I just can’t understand why this CHILD gets away with all of this.”

The public was more outraged by the nature of the complaints against Miley Cyrus than seeing her entire breast on live TV. It’s possible that the MTV viewing audience largely expected something nudity-related to go down when they heard Miley was hosting, or when they saw Miley on stage in little more than a few strategically-placed straps.

The VMA’s weren’t the only place that Miley Cyrus recently showed off her incredible comfort with her own body. The former Disney star also raised eyebrows in the UK with her suggestive new MAC ad campaign, the Guardian reports.

The Advertising Standards Authority received multiple complaints about the ads featuring a nearly-nude Cyrus. Specifically, people were concerned that the photos were overtly sexual and inappropriate viewing for children. Unlike the relatively ignored FCC complaints about Miley Cyrus and her nip slip at the VMAs, these complaints were taken quite seriously, sparking an ASA investigation.

It concluded, “While we considered that the images in all three posters were sexually suggestive, we concluded however, that they were not overtly sexual and unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence.”

MAC has defended the ad campaign from the beginning. According to the company, Miley was in a “confident pose” with a “defiant stare.” While the ASA’s investigation determined that the ad campaign wasn’t “overtly sexual,” they did rule that the Miley Cyrus photos should not be displayed within 100 meters of a school. MAC must have known the photos were pushing the sexy envelope because this was something they’d already foreseen and managed with their ad placement.

Love her or hate her, offensive or just risque, you have to admit that Miley Cyrus always finishes on top.
