Jon Bon Jovi Shoots Through The Heart With Ballad… In Mandarin?

As it turns out, Jon Bon Jovi can sing in Chinese (Mandarin to be exact). Who knew?

According to the Huffington Post, Jon Bon Jovi decided to take a shot at singing a song by Teresa Teng called “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin.” For those not as skilled in Mandarin as Bon Jovi appears to be, that translates to “The Moon Represents My Heart.”

Jon Bon Jovi posted a video of him singing the song, which he recorded to celebrate Chinese Valentine’s Day on his YouTube channel, as reported by the Mirror. Based on their comments on the video, fans seem to love it, however, some were quick to point out that the song originates from Taiwan, not China. The fact that it is credited as a Chinese song appears to have ruffled some feathers. Taiwan and China have often been at loggerheads with some Taiwanese nationalists wanting independence from Mainland China.

“I am very happy to hear him he sings this song. However, this is a Taiwanese song, NOT a Chinese pop song. Just want to set the records straight for the Taiwanese artist who wrote this song and the famous Taiwanese singer.”

Other posters, however, were having none of it and just wanted to celebrate the fact that Jon Bon Jovi made the effort to record this song.

“This was one of Teresa Teng’s famous hits. Just to set the record straight, Teresa was loved in both Taiwan and China. She wasn’t just a Taiwanese star; she was loved in all of Asia. My parents grew up in China and loved all of her music. Please stop politicizing such a beautiful love song as being another Taiwan v.China issue. I just want to commend Jon Bon Jovi for a job well done. I understood exactly what he was singing.”

For others, it appeared to have just been a heart-warming gesture by Bon Jovi that brought back warm memories.

“[S]o amazing. my aunts told me that Teresa Teng was my mom’s favourite singer… Yeah, my mom passed away when I really young but just knowing she loves the singer/song is enough to make me feel touched.”

Jon Bon Jovi was also praised for tackling such a project to begin with.

“My respect for Jon has been upped by 100!! It takes courage to record songs in a language you don’t know. Being an English-speaking Chinese, I know how bloody hard it is to speak Mandarin with the correct vocal inflections LOL”

At the time of writing, the video already as almost 1.2 million views, and already fans are excitedly hoping that Jon Bon Jovi will sing a song in their language.
