Conan O’Brien Sued: California Man Says Comedian Stole His Jokes From Twitter

Conan O’Brien has been sued by a California man who claims that the comedian stole four of the man’s jokes from Twitter, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting.

In a lawsuit filed July 22 in California federal court, Robert Kaseberg of San Diego, who claims to be a comedy writer, alleges that he posted jokes about Caitlyn Jenner, the Washington Monument, Delta Airlines, and Tom Brady on his own blog and Twitter account. All of those jokes later turned up on Conan O’Brien’s show.

In January 2015, Kaseberg wrote a joke and posted it on his blog.

“A Delta flight this week took off from Cleveland to New York with just two passengers. And they fought over control of the armrest the entire flight.”

Conan later told a similar joke on his show that very night.

Kaseberg wrote a second joke that he claims was used on Conan’s show, this time in February.

“Tom Brady said he wants to give his MVP truck to the man who won the game for the Patriots. So, enjoy that truck, Pete Carroll.”

Once again, that joke ended up being used by Conan the next night.

Kaseberg wrote two other jokes that he says Conan stole from him; one about Caitlyn Jenner (“Three streets named after Bruce Jenner might have to change their names. And one could go from a Cul-de-Sac to a Cul-de-Sackless.”) and one about the Washington Monument (“The Washington Monument is ten inches shorter than previously thought… You know the winter has been cold when a monument suffers from shrinkage.”).

Conaco, the production company that licenses Conan’s show, issued a brief statement in response to the lawsuit.

“We at Conaco firmly believe there is no merit to this lawsuit.”

Whether or not Conan O’Brien or his team stole any jokes from Twitter will be up to a judge or jury to sort out. However, as Twitter user Chris Fortson points out, millions of tweets are posted each day often containing jokes; that another Twitter user — or a late-night talk show host — may have the same idea as you at some point is almost a certainty.

Do you believe Conan O’Brien stole his jokes from an obscure comedy writer’s blog and Twitter feed?
