Pastor Sean Harris: Parents Should Punch Gay Acting Children

North Carolina Pastor, Sean Harris, is making his way around the blogosphere for his horrific rant about how parents should treat their children if little boys act a bit “girly”. He urges parents to hit their kids and even break their bones to avoid losing them to homosexuality.
Sean Harris is senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayettesville, North Carolina. During his weekly Sunday Sermon, Harris spoke in support of North Carolina’s proposed Amendment 1, which would outlaw same-sex marriage.Written below are excerpts of his hate filled sermon provided by Jeremy Hooper of the blog Good as You. Harris is heard urging his congregation to attack their children if they appear to be exhibiting behavior that might be considered in violation of standard gender roles.
Harris says in his sermon,
“So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, ‘Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do,’ you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed.Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male. And when your daughter starts acting too butch, you reign her in. And you say, ‘Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play them to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl and that means you are going to be beautiful. You are going to be attractive. You are going to dress yourself up.’”

No one seems to "get" the "spirit" behind what this pastor is saying. No, we can't trust our feelings always, they change, and we can avoid great great mistakes especially in this extreme generation that begins to define you based upon temporary feelings you might have. Balance is more appropriate than ever, even if we need to exaggerate to actually be heard. Come on people – just stop the non-sense – we can't always go by our feelings and must make important decisions and stick to them – we are too wayward before God and mankind.

Seems as though he has forgotten that his job as a pastor is to help people deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and better understand how to love one another as He loves us. This tyrade is definitely NOT indicative of any pastor who actively loves his congregation as Jesus loves; instead it reveals the hateful heart he has shown to possess. It IS indicative of a man who appears to have a personal (or perhaps a family) issue with gay people and has forgotten how to show Gods love to them the way Jesus showed God's love to everyone He knew.

Oh my goodness. At this time in his young life, my little grandson likes purple and pink as his favorite colors (possibly influenced by big sister). Is this the time I beat him, break his bones and his spirit or should I wait until he is a little older? If Jesus accepted a criminal when he was crucified, and even accepted Mary Magdelene, a rumored prostitute, then we can certainly accept gays.

While I do feel the gay issue is pushed sometimes too much down our throats- as with other up and rising issues- this takes the whole other swing of the pendulum to another level! This pastor does not belong in a speaking role for anyone's community and definitely not the speaker of God's words. I am one that believes Faith is better served by someone who can keep his sermons on the real book and not the novel society is trying to write. My son wore the one piece infant suits leftover from his older sister when he was 3- 9 months old, ruffle butts and all sometimes! He is 20 years old now and far from gay! Lessons are learned by the role models in our lives, not by what we wear as a toddler.

Girls should be taught to act like girls and boys to act like boys. You should discourage effeminate behavior in boys such as wearing female clothes and vice versa in girls. You should not hit or punish a child for this experimental behavior, nor laugh at it or bring any attention to it at all. Lovingly, gently redirect them. A parent must realize that there are a wide range of interests that are neither feminine nor masculine. Children should be encouraged to pursue any interest in a gender appropriate way. The pastor is right in concept but over the top in application.

The pastor was very wrong in supporting violence of any kind. It upsets me that immature Christians will scare people away from the true faith and love that is Jesus Christ and what he did for us. This is what people need to see in North Carolina regarding Amendment One, and in other states where there are marriage initiatives on ballot. I will tell them i love them. As a grandmother myself, i know that gay or straight, you will love your grandson. My youngest didn't embrace pink until he was 16. You have time to educate yourself. Rita, there is no such thing as "hate the sin but love the sinner" when it comes to being gay. Is it not a choice to be gay any more than being born with red hair or brown eyes is a choice. Calling what someone IS "sin" is making a definitive statement that this person is innately bad. Some churches love to use this phrase, but its just the same hate masked in "Christianese."

If we were to embrace other words from the New Testament, women would still not have the vote, interracial marraige would still be outlawed, little girls would not be schooled and men's opinions would be the only ones that matter (Paul was a great one for all this). WDJD? What did Jesus do? WDJS: What did Jesus say? Oh yeah, that would be NOTHING about same sex relationships. In addition, note that it was the Roman Catholic church that was conveniently in charge of "translating and interpreting" the Bible into English. Seems to me that the "spirit" behind his statements is exactly what he said openly. Break your kids bones and their hearts. Call it "God's work." And as for your interpretation of "balance," did you even listen to his words? There is no "balance" there. In fact, his words are about as EXTREME as you can get. Is this what right wing Christians call "spirit and balance?" I imagine that those words were used during the Holy Wars, witch-hunting, protesting African-American rights, the women's vote, and interracial marraige. That's right, the right-wing church supported all those things and covered them over with the umbrella of "spirit and balance." "I'm sorry officer, my spirit said that I was only trying to discipline my child. Unfortunately and for some unknown reason, he ended up with a broken wrist. But don't worry, God's got my back on this!" Really? Nice effort in trying to explain his statements, but we're not buying it. Chris Kennedy — there are anti-same-sex-behavior passages in the New Testament, also. There is more in the New Testament than just the teachings of Christ (unfortunately, in my opinion). But, yes, a person can disbelieve in the Old Testament (or regard it as old teaching) and still find anti-same-sex-behavior rants in the New Testament. It might help if you read the text–you could make arguments that are more sound.

Chris Kennedy you are correct Jesus never talked about homosexualiity, but it is mentioned several times in the New Testament. However, I do not believe that Paul who does mention homosexuality in Romans, Ephesians, and Galatians ever talked about violence. This minister is basically condoning child abuse which is also a sin.

You and I may live lives that are better than that of thieves, drunkards etc. However, we are not "compared" to them. Someday we will give an account for our lives and we can not deny that we are guilty of sin. There is nothing we can do on our own to be good enough to live with a Holy God. It would be like saying "I am the best person in Hell." That is not something to shoot for. We need Jesus Christ who paid the debt for our sins. Last time I checked, Jesus actually did express disdain for the richest folks, and suggested they would have a hard time avoiding a trip south. Why do self-described evangelicals in the political realm defend the massive income inequality in this country, while condemning gays? (this is rhetorical, of course. you can believe what you wish about sin, but my opinion is that your definition of sin is based on a fictional story about a dude that may or may not have existed. believe what you want, but don't try to make me live by your definitions)

Matthew 19:4 – “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ “and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ He expressidly mentions heterosexual marriage. It is mentioned more in the NT than the old. It is mentioned in just Leviticus in the old, but it is mentioned in Romans, and Revelations. BTW Revelation was a dream given to John by Jesus. Funny, do any of these guys actually read that book or at least research to make sure the translators didn't fuck something up? There are passages calling homosexuality a moral sin. However in most of the passages the translations are not 100% what they should be. In one case they talk about Sodimites and Male Prostitutes which mean both those things in general or COULD mean those. but they could also mean Calamite (A young boy kept for sex) and Sodimites referring to those who had sex with young boys.
Which means if your a Catholic.. your screwed as a heck of a lot of your priest are going to hell because of that book they praise so much…of course it also says the little boys they rape are going to hell too.

Jesus clearly taught to us love our enemies and not to judge and condemn others (Mt 5-7) because we are all equally guilty before God. However, genuine love is not letting someone you care about do whatever they want.Genuine love compels people to seek what is best for the other person, and sometimes that includes a rebuke. For example, if my son was hooked on drugs, I would desire to free him from that destructive behavior. I would certainly not employ violent methods, but I would confront the issue. If your boyfriend or husband was involved in numerous other sexual relationships with other women and you knew would you confront him? If you had a child that was shoplifting or a habitual liar would you as a parent seek to discipline or correct that behavior? (AGAIN I am not agreeing with Pastor Harris' methods).
Homosexuality is no more of a sin than lying, murder, adultry, stealing or anything else – and the point we are trying to make is that EVERYONE is a sinner before God (read Romans 3). What the Bible does CLEARLY teach is that God made sex to be enjoyed in the context of a marriage between a man and woman. We have rules in our society, not to hinder happiness, but to protect the law abiding citizen. God's laws are no different. He has established them so that we can experience true happiness.
Finally we are certainly not grasping at straws when anyone who is even remotely familiar with the Bible knows that ANY type of sexual immorality is condemned throughout the entire Bible. There was a great deal more to Jesus teaching than just being nice to one another. Perhaps you should take the time to acutally read what it says for yourself. You accuse us of "picking and choosing" when in reality, you are guilty of that very thing (Rom 2:1).

However,regarding you statement, it is not hate to disagree with practices in someone's life that are against God's principles. Why is it okay for Christians to be labeled at hate mongers or intolerant? Isn't a tolerant view one that states "although I don't agree with your stance, I will respect you as a person?" What about the rant from Dan Savage who spoke at the National Scholastic Press Association/Journalism Education Association conference telling attendees how they should "learn to ignore all the (expletive) in the Bible" ? Even gay activists said the speech was inappropriate and offensive. Both, BOTH, of these men went to the extreme. So, thank God for Jesus. Also, you seem to judge good deeds based on some innate sense or morality, but not according to the Bible. I do feel, however, that the parents have an obligation to discipline and guide their children in the way they SHOULD go. Thus the difficulty of translating an ancient language into modern english. Error on the side of grace. The amount of judgement you dole out is the amount that you will be judged with. So best to mind your own business and leave God to be the judge. And about the "church:" Be educated. Be aware. Don't be a blind and deaf sheep.

Understood. Anyone, Christian or otherwise who persecutes you for your choices needs to open up their Bible. We all have areas that we fall short on and everyone should be able to admit that about themselves. If I were to persecute you for a sin, I would be also saying that I am free from fault. Definitely not the case lol I would just encourage you (not knowing anything about you of course) to give Jesus your heart every morning when you wake up. Open it up to Him and let Him show you what is right in your life and what needs changed. I hesitated in this area because there were things I did not want to give up that were clearly wrong, we all have those right
But God kept me around long enough to realize how silly I was at putting foolish actions over eternity. Finally, you may not have meant it this way, but just because you have not "rejected" Jesus, does not mean you are eternally secure. Colossians, Romans 1:21 and many other verses say that we are enemies of God until we have died to our old self and been "Born again." He does require a life change and again I encourage you to let Him have his way in your heart. Forget about what judgemental people say, listen to the one who is worthy of being called Judge, because He is the only one who knows what is really best for our lives

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 states that those who sin (and it mentions the sin of homosexuality) will not inherit the Kingdom of God. You are absolutely right in that if someone is struggling with the sin of homosexuality that we should still love them. However, as Christians, we should not show support for the sin, just as we would not support stealing, adultery, or lying.

But praise be to God that through his grace and mercy, the sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ paid the way for these sins to be erased. His blood washes the labels of liars, adulterers, murderers, and homosexuals away when we admit those sins, confess them before God, believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to die so that we may have eternal life, and then repent from those sins. Praise be to God that He "hates the sin but loves the sinner," because without Him, I would be eternally damned to Hell; yet through Him, I have been born again (2 Corinthians 5:17). And that goes for anyone who accepts Christ as their Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9).

Thankfully, God loves everyone! He does hate our sin, though. God sent His one and only son, Jesus to die for all of our sins so that we can have a relationship with Him. We have a relationship with Jesus Christ by believing and confessing that He died on the cross and rose again and is alive today. Once we accept His offer to have a relationship with Him, this guarantees that when we die, we will go to Heaven and spend an eternity there, rather than an eternity of suffering in Hell. Caspar Mason – I'm not sure if I follow the logic of your statement. Are you saying homosexuality is deeply offensive by modern society?
Anyway, my beliefs don't really fit into the norms of modern society or even historic society for that matter. I just really believe God. So my life is about serving Him, pleasing Him (well, trying to), spreading His name, and loving His people, etc.

The very sad thing about this pastor's rant is that it was the rant of the religious elitists of their day that condemned Jesus, an innocent man, to die a horrific death on the cross. Jesus did willingly give up his life so that all mankind could be saved, however the religious elitists tried to legislate their belief by physically harming Christ. I am a pastor and a father and can not in any way agree with anything this pastor says… another thing I am first and foremost, a complete sinner! But for the grace of God I would be hopeless and lost… but I'm not. I believe that homosexuality is a sin because the Bible calls it a sin… but so is gossip, gluttony, alcoholism, and frustrating your children. All of these things will keep anyone from God's perfect plan which is relationship with Him… so we yield our life to Him, dying daily to these things that separate us from a relationship with Him. On any given Sunday we will have alcoholics, homosexuals, bigots, wife abusers, you name it… in one of our services. It's easy to embrace these people and lead them to God's design, because I am one of these people… struggling with my own sins, but resting on the grace of Christ and the power of His Spirit to give me strength to live each day in this loving relationship with my Heavenly Father.

Nathanael Pierce Nope, I'm saying that I suspect you don't support slavery even though it's clearly commanded by your god in the bible several times, along with genocide. I suspect you don't follow most of the ridiculous laws laid down in Leviticus, and yet they're supposedly the laws he's created, and so not do so displeases him.

Caspar Mason , while Christianity is considered a religion, what makes it different from any other is that it is actually a relationship. Being a Christian means accepting the relationahip which God is offering you.
You're right that other religions exist today, but followers of other religions do not have what Christians have, a living God and the hope of going to heaven when they die

@Ashleigh Jarrell, There are also people who claim to have a relationship with aliens or ghosts. Doesn't mean I have to believe them. You have the freedom to claim to have a personal relationship with a diety, and I have the freedom to think that you are delusional. Heaven could simply be a place that humans made up to give them comfort when they are faced with death. Even before the Bible was written there were numerous cultures/civilizations that had their own interpretation of what the afterlife is. It is pretty arrogant to think that YOUR belief is the only right one. Also, your statement about Christianity being the only religion with a "personal" relationship to a god is false. You may need to study the history of religion.
