Is It Too Little, Too Late For Taylor Swift To Apologize?

Taylor Swift has since apologized to Nicki Minaj for their brief Twitter spat over the 2015 MTV VMAs. The rapper has also accepted Taylor’s apology, and it looks like the two ladies have moved on. But that doesn’t mean that the media has forgotten about Taylor’s controversial tweets.

As previously reported via the Inquisitr, Swift has had been dragged by the media for putting herself in the middle of a feud with Nicki Minaj. The rapper was frustrated when her “Anaconda” video wasn’t nominated for Vide of The Year. She also remarked about the lack of black women on the list. Minaj noted that “women with very slim bodies” are usually nominated.

Taylor thought that Nicki’s remark was about her. In a series of tweets, she said that she “loves & supports” the rapper, and then went to accuse her of pitting women against women.

Minaj, obviously confused, told Swift that she wasn’t mentioning her. Swift tweeted that she would gladly invite Minaj on stage if she wins. Ouch. The media remarked that Taylor made Nicki’s rant all about her.

“Swift’s response to Minaj revealed a lot about the way wealthy white women are socialised to see themselves at the centre of the universe. Minaj was criticising what she perceives as a culture of institutionalised racism — but Swift had to make it all about her.”

The media has also pointed out that Taylor knows very little about feminism. Some have noted that she probably learned some of it from her friend, Lena Dunham. Critics claim that the “Bad Blood” singer only promotes feminism by collecting and showing off her famous female friends. According to the media, there’s more to feminism than just claiming you’re one.

“Feminism is more than just supporting your girlfriends or churning out charming catchphrases about girl power; it’s a political movement, with political aims. Certainly, the feminism of someone like Swift is genuine, but that doesn’t mean it runs particularly deep.”

The bigger issue here though is that Swift has failed to learn to point that Minaj was making about the industry. It wasn’t about feminism or body image. The real issue is that black women are rarely recognized for their accomplishments in the music industry. Swift failed to realize and learn about this very important discussion that took place in recent times.

“And she should. Swift has wasted no time in calling out other facets of the music industry, like Spotify and Apple Music, for treating other recording artists unfairly. Why shouldn’t she address the inequality black, female entertainers face—the very coattails she and a countless number of other female recording artists have ridden to success?”

It doesn’t look like the media will shake off this little Twitter feud anytime soon. Even Nicki invited Taylor to speak out more on this issue, but the singer ignored her invite. Instead, she saved face by apologizing so that both of them could move on. Taylor is also hoping that the media will move on, as well. At least until the 2015 VMAs roll around.
