Why Nicole Kidman Refuses To Talk About Scientology

By all accounts, Nicole Kidman is a delight to speak with in interviews and, even though Nicole seems to be an open book about every aspect of her life, don’t ask Ms. Kidman about Scientology. It wasn’t just the recent interview with Vogue that had Kidman declining to speak about Scientology, either. Nicole also refused to participate in the documentary Going Clear, in which Kidman’s ex-husband was prominently criticized for his role in the cult-like organization.

“Kidman passed on the opportunity to speak to the makers of the film,” writes Vogue‘s Jason Gay, “and has consistently turned away requests to comment out of respect for her children with Cruise.”

Nicole wasn’t as silent when it came to discussing her marriage to Tom Cruise, particularly where the subject of fame and media attention is concerned. Ms. Kidman seems thankful that her rise to fame came long before the intense scrutiny that came with the dawn of social media.

“When I was with Tom, I don’t remember paparazzi sitting outside our house… not like now. This is different,” Kidman said. “We’re the generation that got to duck all that.”

The subject brings to mind Ms. Kidman’s long career, which includes nearly as many misses as hits, and, when asked about one miss in particular -2001’s Moulin Rouge!– Nicole seems more philosophical than rueful in her choices of roles.

“I really think there’s a journey to be had,” Kidman says. “I suppose I kind of have this very spontaneous, nonstrategic [side], which is why I’ve had such a winding career. Even at my height, I wasn’t looking to maintain that. I was always looking for what I feel now—where do I want to go?”

Nicole found new love and in 2006 married Keith Urban. Ms. Kidman and Keith have had their ups and downs as any couple, but they have stayed committed to one another, says Nicole. Kidman recalls seeing Urban perform at a recent show and being overwhelmed by her feelings for him.

“I looked up at him at one point and I saw his tattoos and his foot going, and he had the guitar, and I was like, ‘God, I love that man. I’m so glad I’m in this world.'”

As happy as Nicole is with her new life and her new husband, Kidman admits she sometimes finds herself wanting more and cautioning herself to be content with the joys that she does have in her life.

“I wish I could have met him much earlier and had way more children with him,” Kidman admits. “But I didn’t. I mean, if I could have had two more children with him, that would have been just glorious. But as Keith says, ‘The wanting mind, Nicole. Shut it down.'”
