Delhi Building Collapse: Three People Die After Four-Story Building Collapses In India

Three people, all of them women, were killed in a building collapse in New Delhi, India’s capital city. According to the Times of India, the incident occurred in an area known as Vishnu Garden located in West Delhi. The report adds that ten others were seriously injured in the Delhi building collapse. The building was a four-story structure situated in a narrow lane in Vishnu Garden. Several people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble. Initial reports put the number of people still trapped inside at six.

According to Dipendra Pathak, the joint commissioner of Police, West Delhi Range, two people taken out of the rubble died on their way to the hospital.

“Two people (women) who were taken to hospital have died. Ten persons sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to nearby hospitals,” he told PTI. He also confirmed that all the persons killed in the building collapse were women. The body of one of the victims has not yet been pulled out of the rubble. A large crowd had gathered around the collapsed structure, which further hampered rescue operations.

Meanwhile, a team of eight fire tenders and rescue teams from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) are already at the site carrying out search and rescue operations. They have been joined by police and several officials from the local district administration.

“Two NDRF teams from Ghaziabad, with about 30 men in each, have been rushed to the spot,” a senior NDRF official told newspersons..

According to a senior fire department official, they received the first call informing them of the collapse at around 9:07 p.m., local time.

“We received a call about the building collapse at 9.07 p.m. and immediately eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot to rescue the affected people. It is a four-storey building and many people were feared trapped,” another senior official said.

While the reason for the Delhi building collapse is yet to be ascertained, initial reports say that the structure collapsed after work on a construction project started on an adjacent plot. Last year, the Inquisitr had reported about another building collapse in India — in Mumbai — which left 22 people dead.
