Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour Is A Mega-Success: Will Janet Jackson And Madonna Match Her?

1989 may have been the year Taylor Swift was born, but 2015 will always go down in history as “The Year of Taylor Swift.” Her 1989 album is not only the biggest selling international album since Adele’s 21 a couple years back, but her 1989 Tour is on track to become one of the most successful tours by a female artist in recent history.

Taylor Swift is double-booking 50,000+ seat stadiums in the United States — this is something that even the top touring solo act in history, Madonna, hasn’t been able to do. Besides filling the seats, she is garnering outstanding reviews. Rolling Stone was especially impressed with Swift’s show in New Jersey last weekend.

“Never one to do things halfway, Swift has made this a pop show — or rather the pop show, as far as 2015 is concerned. The whole night was a two-hour pop-blitz spectacle, where the songs retain all the teardrops-on-my-guitar intimacy of her early days, except blown up into massive electro-warrior emotional avalanches pushing the can’t-even-ometer into the red.”

Rolling Stone goes on to note that the show had life lessons, synth-disco raves, acoustic ballads, video interviews with her cats, and others. The Washington Post was also impressed with Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour.

“It was encouraging on Monday night to see Swift doubling down on the most recent entries in her songbook. Very much living in the present, she sang the sleekest tunes from ‘1989’ as if she has been making this kind of music all along.”

The Washington Post goes on to note that Taylor Swift was joined by Lorde. The two sang Lorde’s hit “Royals” together. Taylor Swift has been joined by others on her 1989 Tour, including Martha Hunt, Kendall Jenner, Serena Williams, Karlie Kloss and others.

Two other major female stars will be joining Taylor Swift on the road very soon. Janet Jackson kicks off her Unbreakable World Tour in August and Madonna will kick off her Rebel Heart Tour in September. There are early indications that both Janet Jackson and Madonna are selling well, but not nearly as well as Taylor Swift, especially since they are playing much smaller venues. However, with Madonna charging as much as $400 a ticket, she could come close to earning as much as Taylor Swift when the Rebel Heart Tour ends in Australia this March.

In any case, Taylor Swift, Madonna, and Janet Jackson will certainly give the concert business a huge boost this year. However, if you are fans of all three, especially Madonna, be prepared for your wallet to take a huge hit. If you see Taylor Swift, be prepared for the huge impersonal stadium crowds.
