‘Sherlock’ Christmas Special Will Be Unmissable: Set In Victorian Time With No Modern Gadgetry, Sherlock Will Survive On Wits Alone
Sherlock‘s Christmas special is a treat we cannot afford to miss.
Ever since Sherlock‘s executive producer, Steven Moffat, confirmed in March that a one-off Sherlock Christmas special was in the works, fans of the British sleuth have been eagerly anticipating more news on that front.
And finally, their curiosity was quenched to a large degree when Moffat released a teaser trailer of the Victorian Sherlock special episode at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 9, 2015, Time reported.
Earlier on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, BBC revealed the first look of the Sherlock Christmas special on Twitter. Unlike the modern day rendition of Sherlock, here Holmes and his compatriot Dr. Watson can be seen sporting Victorian clothing and easing in an armchair, in many ways reminiscent of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original detective from the books.

Moffat also confirmed that the standalone episode will release in select theaters across the United States in December.
The trailer has drawn praise from fans for its wit and self-referential aspects, in which Sherlock’s landlady, Mrs. Hudson, complains of being a mere “plot device” in the larger narrative. Perhaps it could mean a more meaty role for Mrs. Hudson in Sherlock‘s Christmas episode.

Even more interesting, however, is Dr. Watson’s confession in the trailer that he has grown a mustache to get himself noticed, which could be interpreted as a meta-counterpoint to Cumberbatch’s stratospheric rise in Hollywood.

With no modern gadgetry at his disposal, Sherlock will only have his wits to depend on, and that is not a bad choice, considering Moffat likes to sprinkle his writing with a generous dose of post-modern humor. According to Empire Online, he spoke to the crowd at San Diego Comic-Con about the essence of the show remaining the same.
“It’s still the same sense of humor, it’s still very much the show you know … But it’s in the ‘correct’ era, which was unbelievably thrilling.”
But fans who were expecting news on Season 4 of the acclaimed BBC series Sherlock were in for some disappointment, with no release date announced at Comic-Con. Moffat, however, confessed that he had the broad structures for the next season in place.
“We know very clearly what stories we’re doing for the next season… and the never-stop-crying cliffhangers.”
With five months to go, Sherlock‘s Christmas special is still some way off. But Sherlock fans will hope Christmas comes sooner this time around.
