Watch ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Premier Live Online: Hit HBO Crime Drama Returns, Streaming Links

Season 2 of the acclaimed HBO crime drama True Detective premieres Sunday night, and fans can watch the episode as it airs live online, and find out whether new stars Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch can live up to the high expectations left by Season 1’s award-winning star duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

For information on how to watch the season 2 True Detective premier live online — including how to watch free and legally — see the bottom of this article. The episode, titled “The Western Book of the Dead,” will stream in real time at 9 p.m. United States Eastern Time, 6 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, June 21. Legal streaming services will archive the episode for later viewing as well.

While season 1 of True Detective took place in the creepy backwaters of Louisiana as the two heroes tracked a bizarre serial killer who based his murders on a supernatural legend known as “The King in Yellow,” the new season features an entirely new storyline and set of characters, and moves the location to the sun-drenched suburbs of Southern California.

The name on the back of the director’s chair is also a new one. Gone is Cary Fukunaga, who helmed all eight episodes of season 1, creating that series’ memorably haunting, supernatural atmosphere.

Behind the camera this time, at least for the first two episodes, is Justin Lin, best known for his work directing three installments of the blockbuster Fast and Furious movie franchise — as well as the upcoming third entry in the rebooted feature film version of the Star Trek series.

But the most important piece of True Detective season 1 remains in place for season 2 — creator and writer Nick Pizzolato, who once again delivers his trademark melange of morally ambiguous cops, unspeakably evil criminals, and darkly poetic dialogue laden with doomsaying philosophical quotations.

So what’s the new True Detective storyline about? Here’s the official synopsis of season 2, episode 1, as issued by HBO.

“The disappearance of a city manager disrupts a lucrative land scheme and ignites an investigation involving three police officers and a career criminal who is moving into legitimate business.”

Intrigued? If so, the best way to watch the episode live online for free is to sign up for the one-week free trial of HBO Now, the new standalone streaming service from HBO.

That offer may be accessed at this link, and cancelled within seven days for those who do not wish to view HBO through the HBO Now app — which can be downloaded through the iTunes Store for mobile devices, and on the Apple TV set-top box to watch on a full-size TV screen.

True Detective fans who have login credentials to a cable of satellite service with an HBO subscription can also watch the True Detective season 2 premiere online via HBO GO at this link, or on mobile devices with the HBO GO app. Unlike HBO Now, HBO Go is available on a variety of set-top streaming devices, such as the Roku, Xbox, PlayStation 4, or Amazon Fire TV, among others. The HBO GO stream usually becomes available just a few minutes after the TV broadcast time.

But viewers may want to start streaming the video early, because last year’s season finale of True Detective was so popular with fans watching live online that it crashed the HBO servers.
