‘Duck Commander: Making The Musical’ Based On Phil Robertson’s ‘Duck Dynasty’ Debuts Tonight On A&E

Duck Commander: Making The Musical is a one-hour presentation that will air tonight on A&E channel. Duck Commander: Making The Musical went behind the scenes to see how Duck Dynasty‘s Robertson family musical came together. Tonight’s special comes just before the premiere of Duck Dynasty on June 24.

Produced by 3292 Productions Inc and Gurney Productions, A&E’s Duck Commander: Making The Musical centers around the Robertson family whose hit show Duck Dynasty has aired in homes all across the nation since 2012. The musical almost didn’t become a reality. In 2013, head of the family Phil Robertson made some controversial anti-gay comments that appeared in GQ Magazine about “sinful homosexuals.” About the comments, according to The Best of Las Vegas, director of the musical Jeff Calhoun stated,

“It really came as a surprise and shock to all of us. We hadn’t been working with the father at all. I was about to leave the project after Phil said those hideous, uninspired, unenlightened comments.”

He also made some comments that many believe were racist. A&E temporarily suspended Duck Dynasty following the controversy. Those negative comments have heavily impacted how many in the general public view them. But they still have supporters who like what they stand for and are excited about tonight’s special.

“When is this on? I love this show, and Miss Kay, you rock..”

“Getting excited!!”

” Love and appreciate your shows and your life!”

“I would rather watch all of Duck Dynasty’s reruns over and over again than watch some of the garbage they put out as entertainment – and that goes for A&E”

“Duck Dynasty is back!!!! Cant wait!! LOVE the show and what you all stand for!!! We need more shows like this.”

As for Duck Commander Musical, producers worked hard on the show and had hoped that despite Phil Robertson’s incendiary comments, somehow the musical would appeal to different races and cultures.

“We shot guns and rode around on four-wheelers and spent some time on the river and bayou and ate all the different food they eat.() I’ve been to their church twice.() We’re not going to change the world, but we certainly hope to move the needle a little bit in the area of tolerance. On both sides.”

Sadly their best efforts were not good enough. The Duck Commander Musical, which was based on the book Duck Commander Family, went live earlier this year in Las Vegas but did so poorly in ticket sales that the show was cancelled after only a month. The Robertson family was excited that their life story was not only made into a hit reality show but also into a musical. They had anticipated that the musical would run through May with some extended dates depending on how well it performed.

To see some scenes behind the musical, be sure to change over to A&E tonight at 9 p.m. Read the tease and see the trailer below.

“The DUCK COMMANDER MUSICAL transports the Louisiana bayou to the stage in a captivating 90 minute show- seasoned with all the southern spirit and down-to-earth humor you’d expect from America’s most famous rednecks, the Robertson family. But while the true-to-life, rags-to-riches story behind A&E’s mega hit Duck Dynasty will surely please its most loyal fans, audiences unfamiliar with the Robertsons will also find themselves charmed- and even moved- by this surprising tale of faith, food and family.”
