Don’t Let The Walkers Get You In Overkill’s Latest ‘Walking Dead’ VR Game

For gamers who are also fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead, games based on the TV series have been a case of extreme hit or miss. Telltale’s The Walking Dead game was certainly a huge hit, now approaching its third season. However, Activision’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, was a complete dud of a game – which is surprising considering it featured Walking Dead fan favorite, Daryl Dixon. However, a new Walking Dead game is about to enter the market, and thanks to a preview at the E3 event held over this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center, it seems Walking Dead gaming will be taken to a whole new level!

E3 is the place to be when it comes to computer, video and mobile games, and related products. The event showcases new technologies and games, as well as connecting technology fans with leading edge companies and emerging markets. Thousands of technology fans pack the event every year for their first glimpse at new items.

Not only has Overkill introduced their new Walking Dead game at E3, they promoted it using their new StarVR (virtual reality or VR) hardware. Starbreeze Studios, who are behind Overkill and the new Walking Dead game brings a VR system that offers gamers “a 210 degree horizontal field of view — the widest FOV in the world, Starbreeze boasted — and 5120×1440 resolution, thanks to dual 5.5-inch displays.”

Starbreeze will bring VR to Overkill's The Walking Dead game

Starbreeze’s CEO, Bo Andersson Klint, is very excited at the direction their gaming is taking in regards to VR hardware.

“The landscape of entertainment is rapidly transforming. Experiences are moving from linear to user-determined, pushing storytelling to responsive and inclusive formats. The virtual reality setting allows us to completely immerse our players in our games. Starbreeze is on the frontier of VR development and we see it as a new platform ready for AAA experiences in games such as Overkill’s The Walking Dead.”

Imagine killing Walking Dead walkers in a virtual reality landscape? It would be just as good as IMAX’s recent announcement to screen Walking Dead episodes on their giant screens. According to Overkill’s website, their Walking Dead game will contain “elements of action, role-playing, survival horror and stealth” and is slated for release in 2016. While the StarVR hardware is exciting news, Starbreeze did not offer a price range for this product or a release date.
