Dog Mauls Boy To Death: 5-Year-Old Mauled To Death By Dog That Had Him ‘Around The Neck’

A dog mauled a boy to death Monday in Chicago. When neighbors realized what was going on, they rushed to the scene. Chicago Tribune reports that the dog attack happened around 9:35 p.m. in the Brainerd neighborhood. The dog had the boy around his neck until neighbors were able to kill the dog after beating it to let go of the boy.

James W. Nevils III was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead.

Residents who lived on the block where the 5-year-old boy was mauled to death by the dog, tried saving him to no avail, neighbor Marquis Lewis said.

“I started hitting the dog with a brick. My brother grabbed a pole from somebody. Then once we got the dog off the baby, we started hitting the dog with the pole and the brick until he died.”

Bianca White was just getting back home across street when she noticed the boy’s mother trying to stop the dog attack against her son.

“They were trying to drag it out of the house, I guess so people could help. So my brother went across the street to get a chair to get the dog off the baby but it didn’t work.”

Another neighbor said the dog momentarily released James, but “went back and grabbed the little boy.”

Lewis told CBS Local that the dog was smacked with a brick in an effort to drop the boy from the clutches of his jaws, but nothing worked.

“We started hitting the dog with a brick. My brother got the pole, started hitting the dog with the pole. I wasn’t really thinking about nothing, but getting the dog off the baby.”

Witnesses describe the dog that mauled the boy to death as a Pit Bull. Despite all the neighbors’ efforts to separate the animal and the 5-year-old boy, it didn’t make the difference everyone had hoped for. The dog was dead at the scene by the time police had arrived. Authorities haven’t confirmed the dog’s breed, according to the report.

Police are conducting a death investigation, but so far no charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
