Evette Reay Suspended: Dress Gets Teen Suspended On Last Day Of School
Evette Reay was suspended from school because her dress was deemed “too short,” and the school’s administration said that it violated their dress code. According to the Canada Journal, Evette, 18, wore the dress on the very last day of school and ended up getting in major trouble for it.
“The graduating senior’s cute mint green dress, which fell just a few inches above her knees in length and included lacy sleeves that reached almost to her elbows, was apparently in violation of the school’s dress code, which requires dresses to reach the top of the knees.”
Evette Reay was suspended after she refused to change out of her dress. She says that she wanted to “feel good” about herself on the last day of high school, and didn’t want to go home and change. The school’s superintendent was called, and Evette almost had her diploma held when she was accused of “insubordination.” Instead, the school’s principal decided to suspend her — something that she and her mom feel is overkill.

Evette’s mother says that the dress passed the “fingertip test,” which should have meant that it was appropriate for school (this means that the dress is longer than your hands from the top of the leg). The school, however, said that the dress needed to be knee-length, and rules are rules.
Fortunately, the wardrobe choice didn’t keep the teen — who has a 3.9 GPA — from graduating with her class. She walked across the stage to receive her diploma last week. She will be attending Idaho State University in the fall.
According to People Magazine, Evette says that she felt threatened by the teacher, and that the way this whole thing was handled was “out of line.”
“It was my last day of school. I wanted to feel good about myself. I was fixing to be a woman in this world that was conquering anything,” Evette told the Idaho State Journal.
News that Evette Reay was suspended for wearing a dress that was too short spread like wildfire on the internet. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Reay, 18, was just 30 minutes away from officially ending her high school years when this incident went down. While her mom brought her different clothes to change into, the school went ahead with their punishment anyway. It is unknown how the school enforced the suspension after graduation.
